single letter registrations

Featured Replies

on sunday past i observed several cars at different times with single letter registrations

C,  D,  L    were some of them....

example  L4 with 3 letters following

excuse any ignorance on my part but what part of registration rules do these fall into

just means its a pre-2001 plate...   not necessarily on a pre 2001 car if the plate has been transferred

L4 QQQ is not a single letter registration. "L4" would be a single letter registration.

Weren't the L4 XXX type plates called DVLA 'Select plates' at one point? Private reg plates but they were a fixed £250 if I recall. You could choose any first letter as long as it wasn't newer than the registration date of the car and then three letter (your initials for example).

We used to do loads of them when I was an apprentice at a Jaguar dealer.

been seeing them all the time now!!!

just like skoda's...now that i own one

I used to see a single digit VRN vehicle every day,  but not for the last four days since it decided to live up to its reputation as the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned,  and is currently at the dealers waiting on parts....

I have one on my MK111 so plate is way older than car 🙂

I've one. You can buy 'em still. About £400 for a single letter with no real significance.

I've seen a few two letter registrations as well like "T6"

same as W7 KPR - the one on my avatar that I haven't actually bought (yet ?? unlikely as I - and more importantly SWMBO - can think of better things to spend a scarce "spare" £400 on)

I heard it explained that the single letter and single digit were formerly owned by certain regional/city councils for their official vehicles, like a mayor's car. G for Glasgow, S for Sheffield etc
