Locking wheel nut replacement advice

Featured Replies

My Kodiaq Edition (7 seats) 1.5 TSI 150 PS DSG is due its first service and I cannot find the locking wheel nut.

The Skoda dealer has confirmed that they have a master socket and will be able to remove the wheels if they feel it necessary. All well and good.

However, I'm going to need to replace the locking nuts at some point and wonder what the least expensive route to take would be.

Grateful for any advice and guidance as to how I can go about doing so.

Did you actually check to see whether it was in the tool kit (in the boot) when you picked up the car. Quite common for dealers to remove items to replace other customers missing items such as umbrella's. I always check these things on collection so there is no expense on my part at a future date. They will always claim missing items were there at handover you we don't check.;)

Superskoda.

You're absolutely correct.

I didn't check when the car was delivered. And the dealer said they were there at handover though I do have the umbrellas. LOL.

So I face the prospect of replacing these at my own cost. Hence trying to minimising costs if at all possible.

Try a local Fast Fit type depot. They will probably be less costly than a Skoda dealer. I had to get a set replaced a while back. Can't remember what it cost now, but it was very reasonable and less than I was expecting. Alternative would be to get a new set off Ebay and remove the old ones yourself following videos on Youtube, but I would go with the Fast Fit.

Take a photo of the locking wheel nut cap and see if you can pattern match it on Ebay... where most keys are available.

Or buy a new set on ebay and get dealer to swap

Or when its at the dealers - ask him to identify which one it is and order a replacement key

Dear All,

Thank you for all your suggestions which have given me a number of leads to follow up.

I'm off to photograph the lock nut.

I wonder if anyone has experience of this company:  locking wheel nut keys which has an interesting offer.

Which company... the one that offers a matching service on ebay?

Has to be worth a call

Thank you SimonAudi for the heads up. Much appreciated.

Main dealers don't always charge the earth, just send them a picture of the locking wheel nut and ask them to order a replacement key up to collect when you're in for the service.

Are you 100% sure it isn't in the car? A common mistake is not to lift enough of the boot floor up, in a lot of configurations the locking wheel nut key is stored forward of the spare wheel.

I don't think this applies to you with your being a 7-seater, but on the 5-seater the jack etc. can be a bit of a stretch away...

Thanks Silver1011 for your suggestions.

The seven seater doesn't have a spare tyre.

The garage is checking all these places as I type.

Once again thankyou.

Maybe yours doesn’t but my 7 seater has a spare wheel.

Replacement locking wheel nut key cost £37 from the mail dealer. Why spend time on KwikFit, ebay etc?

Dealer just phoned back confirming that key couldn't be found.

He said I needed an 'H' key.

Offered to supply one for £35.

SimonAudi has pointed me in the direction of EBAY where an 'H' key can be had for £17.25.

So I'll be heading in that direction.

I would still pictorially confirm that the shapes looks correct before you order.... (remember the nut is the reverse image)

Could just put a normal bolt in and cover probably get shot down here but no one will know and to be fair if someone wants the wheels there’s quick ways to remove most locking wheel nuts anyway

Locking wheel bolts are more hassle than they're worth.

The very fact the keys are largely generic and freely available online tells you all you need to know.

If you're the sort of person to be out on the streets at night nicking alloy wheels you're going to have one of the VAG kits that contain all combinations.

As advised above, put a fifth regular wheel bolt on with the plastic caps covering them all and take the reassurance of being able to get the wheel off in case of a puncture.

In the unlikely even that someone steals your wheels (it's a Skoda, not a Golf R, and it's 2019 not the 1980's) they'll likely take the bolts too, so from an insurance perspective there's no risk there either.

You might want to get the dealer to confirm in writing that they confirmed your locking wheel nut key was present during the PDI.....

Just a quick note to say thank you for your help and advice and to let you know that I have found the lock nut key.

It was in the car all along — under the third row seats. So no need to purchase a replacement.

The owner's manual does not contain this important piece of information.

I only discovered this by looking through the forums.

What is even stranger when the car went in for its service the workshop confirmed that they had searched all the likely places in the car and that the key couldn't be found.

They then offered to supply a replacement for £35.

Thankfully I didn't follow this up.

Thank you again for your support.

Thanks for your comment.

I thought I had lifted enough of the boot floor. What I didn't realise was that I had to lift the third seat row. I didn't even know at that point you could lift them.

That was the key bit of information I was missing.

Once again thank you all for your help and guidance.
