Hesitation occasionally when accelerating

Featured Replies

I've already thought of a potential solution but I'm asking for your thoughts / opinions.

My ol' man's beamer (09 plate 318i, 60k on the clock) has started to 'jerk' when accelerating. You'd be moving away, in 1st (or 2nd, 3rd) and the car basically misses a beat. Only few a split second but it does give you a noticeable jerk. It's only started doing this in recent weeks.

I've already suggested to my dad that a good old Italian tune up is required to get the engine up to temperature and to blow the cobwebs out. My dad drives now on errands here and there, but by no means rags the car. The car's life has always involved stop start commuter traffic. My dad is of the opinion it may be the battery, but I'm skeptical of this as he has said the stop start does work (even if not as frequently as he would like). The car is serviced as and when required and it's run on V power juice.

My dad is convinced a recent trip to the Lakes gave it a good blast, but as I've explained, sitting in 6th gear at 70 is hardly making the car do a lot of work.

Any thoughts on this?

+1 for an Italian Tune

Works wonders on my city runaround (Citroen C1), stops hesitation as described and improves low rev torque noticeably.

thanks

Whilst my dad's driving hasn't really changed, the engines in his cars have. All his other beamers were port injected, as was his mk1 mondeo.

Think I'll have to get him out tomorrow and get him to give the car a 'ragging'

?

What does the regular and as when required servicing consist of, and is this at BMW / Independent or DIY servicing?

When were the spark plugs replaced and the Air filter, and what about the fuel filter?

BMW stealership servicing and it seems similar to our servicing; an inspection service and a major service including oil. The brake fluid has it's own servicing schedule as well.

I'd have to check on the fuel filter and spark plugs (don't when or if they've been changed) but I know the air filter was changed in May on it's last service.

I would be sure to check when the Spark Plugs and Fuel filter show as being replaced on a 10 year old / 60,000 mile BMW before doing any 'Italian Tune',

Just because BMW can be very like Skoda Main Dealers and charge a price for Servicing fixed, and yet not replace parts because a Tech decides not required but not looking.

I'll have a double check on what's been done. Thanks for your suggestions
