DPF Issue on Octavia CR TDI (Remapped)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Bought my first Octavia vRS CR TDI 170 2 weeks ago private sale.

I bought it as I had previously had a Fabia vRS 1.9PD which was brilliant and had rarely had any issues. However ...

The guy I purchased it off had an issue with DPF so it took it to garage who said its going to cost at least £900.

He spoke to a mate who said to get the DPF removed and remapped to avoid light showing on dash.

He had this done recently and then sold the car. When I picked it up it had no lights on dash and run perfectly fine. He even said give it some revs to test out the remap and it had all skoda stamps in history and had flywheel/clutch/service completed recently etc

After a few days the DPF light came on but performance was unaffected.

Then the week after I was driving on motorway and the revs dropped (I suspect an overboost situation form what i've read  - however there was only me in the car) and the car went into a limp mode but no lights other than DPF remained on the dash.

I've got Ross Tech VCDS so plugged that in and came up with only 3 errors (2 for electric windows / 1 for Climate Control) I saved the file and cleared those DTC's and they haven't come back but the DPF light remains on.

If the DPF has been removed and the cars been remapped why would the light come on and the car go into limp mode? - I've spoken with previous owner and he's going to check with the guy who remapped it as they said it wouldn't ever come on after remap but I suppose it sold as seen so don't expect him to chase.

Do I have to force a regen on VCDS in order to trick the car somehow?

I've read this could be the Turbo Vanes sticking as well as the actuator or possibly the EGR valve ? ( have people used Mr Muscle oven cleaner from what i've read also)

Do these need cleaning maybe taking apart?

Or could it be a sensor of some sort?

The car to drive was spot on before this and now driving to work with no turbo is frustrating.

I just don't know which avenue to take first.

Cheers in advance.

Not much help but it sounds like the DPF is very much still there!

Not sure i would want to purchase a car with a DPF chopped out as that’s now an MOT failure.

Have you checked the obvious hoses under the bonnet to check nothing is loose?

I too am suspecting this.. Has the previous owner supplied any proof of this being done?

I haven't heard of anyone having the DPF light come on after it's been deleted and coded out..

Might be a good idea to visually verify the delete and make sure it was actually done.

If you still have access to the VCDS you could check what the car says about current DPF capacity etc.

I think there should have been some warning belts when the seller said it had the DPF removed (MOT fail) and was selling it despite it having had the DPF removed recently. That very much feels like a car with potentially expensive issues they are trying to shift. Happy to be wrong though!

At this point it feels like the DPF either hasn't been removed, removed badly or something completely unrelated 😕

Either way, warning lights should almost always have an error code stored:

- Can you post a full autoscan from VCDS?

- Can you also add a picture of the dash to confirm which light it lit?

Thanks everyone ... the saga continues ... I managed to plug Ross techs VCDS in and tried following the Regen process.

soot level - 44.7% (so unable to complete a regen while idle - issue is if gets past 45% not sure if vcds will allow forced regen)

managed to get coolant temp upto 70 (just)

the turbo temp was 156 however there were no temps showing for before DPF or after DPF for the temp sensors (I surmised these have been deleted off the ecu following remap/removal of DPF?)

So went to complete a driving Regen and follow the instructions but vcds wont accept the 12233 code (shows an error) for engine (will only accept the idle Regen code - tried this but that aborted)

spoke with previous owner who said it’s definitely been removed and remapped but with reading up I’m starting to think it wasn’t remapped correctly to take account of the DPF warnings that would come up.

Ross Tech have asked for a full scan so will provide that to them and on here an take it from there ... only 3 faults come up when I’ve done it on autoscan which are left & right windows and HVAC which I think is air con (I read somewhere that all codes need to be deleted before Regen can take place though?)

so much info knocking around on here and Ross tech site but better to have that than none as it helps to diagnose faults quicker.

Will provide full scan in a bit with picture of amber DPF light.

thanks everyone so far who is helping with this issue.

Appreciate the help 👌👍

In which case, there is no way the car can perform a regen - it needs the extra temperature information.

Do you mean % or g? The maximum soot loading if 45g before the DPF needs to be replaced. No tool can force a regen at the stage. There is a chance this is just a side effect of however the DPF delete was performed.

At this point I think you're choices are either:

- Have the engine software returned to stock, then replace/refit the DPF any anything else that's been messed with

- Take it to a decent tuner and have them start from scratch with a known good DPF delete and a map of your choice

Given you're in Wakefield, it might be work giving Darkside over in Barnsley a ring as I've heard good things about them. If nothing else, they might be able to take a look and suggest some next steps.

thanks langers2k. I suspect if nothing can be done by ross tech via vcds with not having correct conditions in place its a remap job again or get under car and see exactly I've actually got attached to this engine.

I've only just registered on Ross Tech and awaiting approval so will post the autoscan on here …

Apart from the battery being a little low, there isn't much there to go on. There are no faults or any other reason for the DPF light to be on so the DPF delete is very suspect at this point. I doubt VCDS is going to help given that...

The ECU software version is 9977 which means it's had the 'emissions fix' applied at some point. I would have expected a decent DPF delete to have also rolled back the SW to a previous 'unfixed' version, even more so as 5751 has previously been released for your ECU.

Thanks langers2k appreciate your support.

i contacted Darkside and they sounded great only problem is the price and not willing to entertain figures of £450 plus for remapping vs what I paid for the car.

Anyone know of a decent remapper who is cheaper but will compete the DPF Delete correctly ?

Thanks in advance.

You could try AmD, Bigfishtuning, Revo or Racingline (previously Shark or bought Shark)?

I'd expect them all to charge a similar amount though :/

The low-budget option would be to get a mate to cut the DPF out of the downpipe and replace it with a pipe, then get it towed to a tuner who tune it out. However, I presume that since its not the easiest thing to fabricate it would cost nearly as much to do.

  • Author

Thanks Langers2K and Marfrohun 👍

i read on here about might also be the exhaust pressure sensor but having looked I do already have the revised “made in Malaysia” one fitted so suspect it can’t be that and looked at the other tuners you suggested and they are miles away so Darkside best option for tuning by looks of it.

just so frustrating buying a car you bought as a run around to go then spend 20% of cars value on another remap to sort out a bloody light which shouldnt come on when DPF is removed.

Im basically paying £450 to have an error light removed off dash which vcds should do because it put the car in limp mode 🤣

do these made in Malaysia sensors go faulty ? I’m wondering where if I try that I could get the soot levels down to then calibrate the DPF via vcds but only problem I have is there were no readings on the modules in vcds for before and after DPF (with it been removed and having a straight thru pipe) wondered whether we that’s been deleted partly out.

Thanks

If it had stock software on the ECU, there would be a fault code which VCDS could clear - the problem is the software has been messed with and is hiding the problem from you. Given it's had a DPF delete, the DPF innards should have already been removed so there is no soot to burn off... :/

Until you're able to find out what's causing the error light, there's not much point swapping sensors or trying to adapt a missing DPF.

Do you know who did the original DPF delete? If they are even half decent, I'd hope they'd be willing to take a look at a reasonable price rather than a full map + DPF/EGR delete price.

Thanks Langers2k (I do appreciate ur feedback)

the remapper is a good 2 hours away from me and the previous owner said It sounds like he’s done it wrong and wouldn’t want to use again but has found another remapper who could do it cheap but again it’s same distance.

ive found on VCDS the module for soot level and the rising figure which maybe causing the car to go in limp mode with light on dash.

i have 3 figures :

Particle Filter Oil Ash Volume

-0
Particle Filter Carbon Mass (spec.) - 48
Particle Filter Carbon Mass (act.) - 0

i suspect what I need is to get the particle filter carbon mass (spec) deleted off the ecu.

i spoke with Darkside again and it gets worse ... I know they are valued as great remappers and I get it but I’ve bought a cheaper alternative to my golf R as a cheaper runaround with the miles I do and they want £70 for diagnostics, £480 for remap and if it needs an EGR kit another £100 ... it’s just not viable for what I paid for the car.

Before I look at buying a standard DPF and fitting it and trying to get a stock remap fitted back to its normal 170bhp.

does anyone know of anyone who would be willing to work with us on trying to delete this carbon mass figure out of the DPF?

it seems bonkers trying to throw £650 on a 150k miler work runaround for a light on a dash for a figure which is speculating the carbon mass.

thanks

My car has done 146k and I personally wouldn’t be happy paying that much to sort out what seems like a simple plug and play issue however I can’t see returning it to standard being anymore cost effective.

If your prepared to travel why not search for another tuner although arguably once you factor in fuel Costs you may not be far off that higher figure anyway?

All tuning work on these cars seems relatively expensive (£350-450) compared to older engine generations. I would have expected the price to start coming down by now given their getting older but it hasn't.

Your options seem pretty clear but I don't think there is a cheap/easy direction for you 😞

- Spend most a day driving to see the original or seller recommended mapper can fix this.

- Use a reputable mapper but pay extra for proven software and their experience.

- Refit the DPF and flash the stock software. A good condition DPF will probably be £500-1000 alone...

With all three options, it should just be a software flash and obvious fitting a DPF if returning to stock. There is also a chance their are other issues currently being hidden by the bad ECU software but it's impossible to see these until you've taken the first step. I know these aren't the answers you're looking for but I can't imagine an alternative.

Who was the original mapper and who did the seller recommend? Just curious as it might be worth seeing how well reviewed regarded they are.
