Rear disc conversion: Felicia PickUp

Featured Replies

Does anyone who carried out this conversion back in the day still visit here?

My project progresses well on the Pick Up.

Recent tightening up on car inspections in France looks like I will not be able to change the engine to something with more bhp, but not the end of the world as my 1.9 is low mileage and with a remap is good for what it is.

Front suspension all done now with Mondeo calipers and 17" wheels which went a treat!

Now it is rear suspension. Old threads pointed this conversion to be Mk3 Golf rear stub axles fitted with Mk2 discs. And here I am all over the place!

There are several part numbers for Mk3 discs (I am fitting new ones) but I cannot see any references as to where there are any changes! Might someone know if there are any subtle differences relating to engine type maybe?

Then there are the caliper carriers - there seems to be different part nubers for 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 engines. Does this mean the calipers are different too?

As for the discs, I see that the MK3 Golf used discs with a 4x100 PCD - can one use these? Why do old threads refer to Mk2 ones?

Finally, many listing on ebay and the like refer to a stub axle being suitable for Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3! So it is all a guessing game for me now! Unless anyone can fine tune it for me?

I thought I had it all sussed when I came across this listing on ebay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/362077348734?ul_noapp=true

But the seller said that I would need a 'conversion plate' to use this kit. I asked him if he had such  a plate and not heard back! I wonder if I buy the kit and work out how to make a conversion plate if needs be as it cannot be too hard with basic engineering skills...

Fitting the discs is not the end of the world and purely for looks (drums look ridiculous behind 17" wheels!) so will contunue as is, but I would like to make the conversion. So help is really appreciated.

Thanks!

I would suggest about the mk3 parts as they're getting old and harder to find now.

I recommend finding a Polo 6n2 GTI and getting the complete rear brake set up from it, so

Calipers

Carriers

Stub axles

Hubs

Discs (232mm)

And then some conversion hoses mk4 golf to mk2

Will all bolt straight up to a Felicia.

Thanks!

I just found an online parts supplier in Germany who listed things in a user friendly fashion. He is out of stock the calipers for the GTi 6N2, and cannot immediately supply the 232mm discs, but he has all the parts for a Mk3 at a little over half the price of the kit on ebay, but these are 226mm I am sure that a 6mm difference of the disc size will not be noticed!

Thanks Nu99et.

I ended up buying new Mk3 parts that fitted a treat. All are on now just waiting for the handbrake cable that is taking an age to arrive, but test driving it without for the moment! I cannot say I notice any difference but certainly looks the part. I am going to fit the larger Audi master cylinder that you all were talking about in the old days. The brake pedal travel is lower, but not hugely so. Maybe the larger master cylinder will help.

There are probably not many people playing around with Felicias now, but in case there is anyone and they want to do a rear conversion, and not put on used parts from a scrappy, then the following oem numbers are what you need. No need to buy oem as the aftermarket ones are good and half the price of the conversion kits that are on ebay!

1 x 333501117 Stub axle

1 x 333501118 Stub axle

2 x 357615601 Disc

2 x 191598625 Bearing - (make sure you buy the kits that include the retaining nut!)

1 x 1H0615423DX Caliper

1 x 1H0615424DX Caliper

1 x 191615611D Backplate - not necessary, but its cheap enough.

1 x 191615612B Backplate

1 x 1H0615425 Caliper frame

1 x 1H0615426 Caliper frame

4A0611021D Audi master cylinder. Optional. See comments on this in earlier threads.

By the way I followed your example and fitted 17" wheels as I was picking up gravel chips that lodged behind the mondeo calipers once or twice on the smaller wheels!

What handbrake cable have you ordered? I found this to be the biggest minefield of the rear disc conversion.

It is just the standard Felicia one as my original was a bit frayed.

Read back on some of the others' conversions regarding the cable. It needs a spacer making up, and I reckon the cable could be re-routed to make it better and maybe cutting back the spring.

I seem to remember in one of the past posts, someone said there is a cable by an aftermarket supplier made for the job - it might be worth hunting this out.

Hydraulics were not a problem for me as I have a brake line flaring kit, so made up a fitting to suit a couple of flexible hoses from an older car where I replaced them with steel braids.

For my pick-up, I was advised I had to use an ATE 24.3727-2508.2 These have an outer length of 1470mm and and inner length of 1782mm. I see that your Felicia is a pick-up too, so if I was you I would try to find a pair of these.

Correct! If you do a reverse look up on this part number it equates to 6U7 609 721 which is the p/n for the std Pick Up cable.

They are readily available from Autodoc or Onlinecarparts.com.

I am not 100%, but I suspect that the ATE part "equates" to the OEM 6U7 609 721 only insofar as the ATE part can be used to replace the OEM one, and they are not identical. When I did the rear discs on my Caddy the existing cables took a great deal of fiddling (involving spacers and cutting of springs as you mention) and were still awkward because they were not really long enough. The ATE cables made things much easier, partly because they are longer. What I do not know for sure is whether the cables that were on my pick-up previously were actually OEM standard cables.

Ah, I see what you mean. Thanks!

If this is the case, then I should be OK as the ATE number came up when I entered the oem p/n into Autodoc, so these are what I have ordered! If it is easier with these over the originals, then it is a bonus!

I had a note from them yesterday that they will be delivered next week.
