I think more likely the low speed relay getting dodgy inputs via a wiring issue.

If the relay contacts were sticking it couldn't really explain that on/off/on/off event you described, I don't think.

T'is  a strange one.

agreed..its is a mystery of course to try to envisage the situation without seeing it..i cant get access underneath.

i did at one stage consider some kind of earth immobiliser,  but disconnecting the battery earth is quite easy and now that i have learned how to by pass the central locking on the drivers door it seems so quick to do

ps..the battery went flat on christmas eve with the alarm system engaged...fully locked by remote key button..

that was in a quiet street in bristol...i was awakened by my daughter to say my alarm was going...2 a.m.

the neigbours werent to happy....

the battery was flat at that point and i got a push in the morning...started straight off...

i had in the very beginning envisaged renewal of the controller and radiator sensor...and the wiring checked as it is in the mainstream of any weather going through the radiator or splashing up from the road...there is an under engine cover of course and at the same time have an engine coolant change....i dont think its been done since new .. dec 2008

Wouldn't it be a better idea to solve the mystery of the fan running on?

...Hi mr Crow, I was thinking about you and this issue recently as someone else had it and I wondered if you solved it. I think it starts after a hefty water bath, if you know what I mean. Its easy for me to say this but I think its best to bite the bullet, get the issue solved at either Skoda or a reputable VW repairer and take the worry out of driving/parking and finding a flat battery. Did you ever replace the actual battery?

I would have a little word with a dealer, ask them if they could provide a loaner, whilst they do the work. Mention age, disability, etc as that may go a long way to getting them to let you have a car for a week or so. Suggest you might even consider a P/X next year. Give them what they want to hear! 😀  A year from now, the issue will be a distant memory, rather then a continual thing.

Oh, and it'll save the extra cost of the jump-charger so thats a ton toward the peace of mind repair!

Hi chaps...the bullet tasted sweet

i found a local proper AUTO ELECTRICIAN...most of the other ones that came up but really were domestic ones which google (auto electrician near me) picked up

the chap is a mobile engineer so he was working in my garage nice and dry....he gave me a run through what he would do...i left him to it for a bit then he called me back and showed me the results....all clear except for a closed ciruit/earth on the fan controller which he would investigate...soon he called me out to the garage again and had located a damaged wire bundle near part of the bodywork showing rubbing/corrosion/and verdigris on the area where the bundle insulation had been rubbed off over time and vibrations.  it was behind the left hand fog light,  just below the fan controller....how he knew beats me...experience and deduction??

later he called me out again after doing a harness repair and ran the diagnostics again for me and got all clear for the whole car..

he took two and a half hours to do the whole job and took £45 per hour...which is the local rate...he just lives round the corner would you believe!!

so deducting £100 for a jump starter saved leaving £22.50 paid extra for peace of mind repair

he also does mobile servicing, recon gassing, and anything car orientated....except MOT's but gave me the people he uses for his van MOT just round the corner from him!!

thanks again all for your replies...and i hope this may help others who may get the same annoying situation with their fan

cheers
