What to replace the fabia with?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I've had my fabia vrs for three years now, and it's quite easily the longest time I've ever owned a car in 30 years of driving. Great car and still enjoy it.

Got an itch for a change though. I've been thinking about a MK1 se and throwing some serious mods at it (always liked the se MK1 vrs) or possibly a BMW 123d coupe and have it remapped.

Anyone who has swapped from a vrs......what did you replace it with? Any suggestions?

I'd like something quick and reasonably frugal

I've got a budget of about 7-8k.

Double post....can a mod delete this one please?

Discount the 123d just google N47 engine and you will soon be turned off from that engine.

Yeah I've read about this issue. One of the things that make me hesitate with it. Although I have read that some been recalled and had the timing chain issue rectified.

Nice Cars though.  Approximately 270hp is available from just a remap

Nice cars have considered one of them in the past but it is an issue with all of them pretty much so it really is a ticking timebomb with them

new chain is 2k job at a garage just to change for peace of mind :o

A dsg quattro will be mid 30’s mpg combined i would imagine.

dsg and quattro will both effect mpg.

i did have a 2.0 tdi quattro a3 170 and it was a lovely car to drive.

handling was amazing

2005-2007 Jetta PD 140 with go faster bits (Intercooler, remap, RARB). Unfortunately, this "don't pollute our cities" lot will make it expensive or illegal to run one through a low emissions zone before long. Won't match a 1.9PD for economy but will do well enough and has far greater scope for power without major surgery.

Current crop of cars leave me feeling uninspired. The tech integration on most/all of them is a draw, but I can't commit to leccy only as rnge and time to refuel would make me lose my mind, feel petrol is "limp" after 15 years of torquing 1.9PD TDI. As a mate said, don't get a hybrid, you're paying for two sets of power systems. Wait until electric has more going for it.

Unreconstructed much?

Modern turbo petrols have torque and revs, try a good one and be surprised.

I currently have a 1.5 tsi

same output as the original fabia vrs 130bhp

it is in a slightly heavier car but the engine is a dead duck.

wltp has the engine geared for emissions. The torque output at low revs is probably half that of an old turbo diesel but it is the way of the world now

Good post....haven't had a Jetta since the mid nineties. Will have a look

  • 2 weeks later...

I replaced my 2004vRS - bought new - with a 2007Vrs SE, bought secondhand in 2010. Then that was replaced with a nearly new Qashqai in 2016 and that was swapped (almost without any extra money) for a new Suzuki Ignis SZ5 in 2018. It's a GREAT car but probably far from what you're wanting...
