Intermittent wiper speed

Featured Replies

Howdy,

Is it possible to alter the speed of the intermittent feature of the wipers? My Citigo is a 66 plate and 20 seconds between swipes makes the feature virtually redundant. My sons 62 plate is 10 seconds so there evidently is some room for change.

I have the same issue with mine (66 reg). I mentioned it at its last service but they said they could not adjust it, which is *******s imo.

Here's another non answer . Intermittant wipe is controlled by  a relay in circuit -so how do you adjust a relay???

Relay would have to be changed,to another with different delay timings, assuming there might be one to fit.As I am no auto electrician ,not sure if this is located under the dash ,near steering column,or may be controlled via management module.Had a look on the internet for location, but no luck.

Hopefully, some one with the knowledge will reply -  its not *******s....

The fact that Skoda have set it to 20 seconds is the *******s part. Whats the use of a 20 secod delay? Twice as long as the earlier models. It's like having a car from the 70s with no intermittent wipe function at all.

Yep, I find I have to use the flick wipe on a regular basis. The frustrating bit is when the wipers are going continually and you stop as they then slow to a sensible intermittent speed!

Not much info via google, only thing I can find is on an UP! forum, where someone states that the wipers are controlled by the Gateway ECU, not a relay.  Maybe it can be coded using VCDS?

Light rain today, so I was using the intermittent setting for quite a few miles. A sweep every 5 seconds while moving, although it did seem to take longer between sweeps when stationary. My car was registered in March 2016

Weird, same year but 20 seconds on mine but quicker when stationary. It does suggest Skoda have varied the hardware that times it.

A relay is a simple on/off device and all it does is allow a low current switch to control a high current device.

In "the old days" a simple RC circuit (that is a resistor and a capacitor) supplied timing for delay wipers. In simple terms, that is to say the "R" value controlled how long it took the capacitor to reach the voltage needed to trigger a relay to click on, to power the wipers. Primitive, but at least you could change the R value, often done from the switch setting on the wiper control stalk.

In "modern times", say the last 20 years, the wipers are controlled by software settings, reliant on actual real-time clocks in a CPU-based subsystem. Sometimes called a BCM (body control module - oddly - but other names depending on manufacturer).

Modern cars that have a switch on a stalk that sets wiper delay speed just send a signal to the BCM (or whatever name). This is often done with resistor packs, so the BCM can tell by a voltage what delay has been selected (cheap to implement) according to switch position.

I'd be pretty sure that if you needed to alter wiper delay, you'd need access to the software, but finding someone to do this would be a challenge.

If however, there has been a version of Citigo/Up/Mii or maybe Fabia that has variable delay wipe capability, it is not beyond belief that the BCM software would respond to the right stalk switch - they really do try to keep the total number of variants of software at a minimum, and change functionality by eliminating hardware. I know, I used to do this!

Anyway, it would be a mission to figure it out. Flick wipe may have to suffice!

CAN bus have made things different. That's why we have service position for wipers. After you shut down ignition and push stalk down your wipers go and stay up.

For the same reason intermittent wiper have variable speed. Wipes less when car is stationary. More often when moving.
