Bristol council considers banning diesel vehicles

Featured Replies

There are always Councils or Councilors suggesting / proposing stuff. some did years ago and never get on with it, or can not.

Lets see as a General Election comes just which Councils leaders will try to get support of different group or try not to pee off other groups.

Any change that Bristol will be getting any Green MP's elected later this year?  Or a Council with a majority of Green councilors and a Leader from the Green Party?

Bet that would only cover people LIVING in Bristol, not those who have to drive into Bristol...

Bristol to ban private diesel cars from the city centre area by 2021. If successful, I suspect this will be the start of a slippery slope and the kiss of death for diesel cars and prices will drop drastically.

Oh well, too late now - but I'm not sure I'll ever buy another...

Which just leaves all the PM2.5 particles from the many buses, vans and lorries - which surely contribute far more to the pollution level than the private diesel cars?

Was planning on moving out of the City anyway. Just won’t shop there anymore and keep my killer machine 😛

Bristol councillors probably don't realise that an eu6 diesel will be cleaner than an eu4 petrol.

I was working in Germany Last week and most of my colleagues over there were replacing their diesels with new............ Diesels. One had a hybrid for tax reasons.

The fact it needs £113m government grant, nearly 4 times that of Leeds, I’d be surprised if they ever get it off the ground.
I’ve just been involved in obtaining grants for businesses within the Leeds Clean Air Zone. Their initial ambitions were just as big as Bristol but they quickly realised it was unworkable for both business and the community. They soon dropped the cars and vans out of the ban and just applied it to taxis, buses and trucks.
The biggest issue was around public transport and whilst Leeds isn’t great, it is a lot better than Bristol and if they want to remove cars off the road they will need to invest a lot more into their public transport first

Nice to see some common sense beginning to enter the debates ...

Thankfully I sold my 2.0d scout last week, .......... and replaced it with another Diesel 😁

GMTE are putting a £10/year charge on their "Free" concessionary travel pass if you want to use Trains & Trams from the 1st February, Bus travel not affected.

As both my missus & myself have these concessionary travel passes and use the railways quite often I think we'll need to update our passes by the look of things.

From reading about all these CAZ.ULEZ,ZEZ,WPL etc it seems more & more local authorities are going to start implementing these measures in one way or another.

It looks like they want to kill two birds with one stone, Congestion & emissions.

See its all well and good bringing in these charges and what not if the town/city in queation has decent public transport links and systems.

Theres talks of them.being brought in over here too, but the public transport system cant handle the current passenger volumes, nevermind if more people try to leave the car at home, and links to commuter belt areas are non existent or pitifully under resourced.

and that hits the nail on the head.

There was a program on ITV last night on the death of the high street. One of the big issues was no free parking, imagine the effect of being charged to drive into town and then charged again to park. The same people who then introduced these additional charges will then be wondering why they have a ghost town.

I couldn't get my head around the measures Newcastle want to bring in whereas they want to charge £50 for a bus to enter the city centre!!! but leave private car use alone!

It’s the same in Leeds but within the ring road and for some of my clients I have been having to apply for grants to enable vehicle upgrades. Cars and vans are exempt at the moment but trucks, buses and taxis will be charged. One of my clients uses a truck with a grab and it carries 8 pallets. I had to argue with Leeds Council that not running the truck and using vans instead would increase traffic by an additional 7 vehicles causing more congestion and pollution, otherwise it would be to move the business and jobs outside of Leeds. Eventually they got the grant but had lots of hoops to jump through.

Sure but they already have a light rail system using electric power.

There Is only 6 of them and usually packed already so nowhere near the capacity to cope with additional demand and don’t cover all the areas the buses do.

Are they C-Con units i wonder?

:D
