Snow Chains for my VRS

Featured Replies

Am driving to Europe this winter and will need winter tyres and snow chains for my 2010 diesel Occy VRS - can't seem to find snow chains though - is it because of the wheel/tyre size (225/40/18) and clearance to bodywork etc?  Or can the full size spare wheel (205's with 17" (?) rims be fitted all round allowing snow chains to be fitted?  If not, it's going to be a long trip in the Mrs' Qashqai!

Thanks,

Phil

Covered in  section in the manual and acceptable tyre sizes and offset. No 18" sizes are approved presumably due to clearances.

Is there any snow socks that meet European requirememts now instead of chains?

Consider fitting 205/50R17 tyres on steel rims.

These should fit and allow you to use chains:

These steel rims have a specification of 6.5Jx17 ET38 5x112 57.1

Thanks for the advice - appreciated 🙂

I found the following information in the manual:

Snow chains must only be mounted on the front wheels.

Only fit snow chains with links and locks not larger than 9 mm when fitting 6Jx17 ET45 rims with 205/50R17 tyres.

The ET38 rims have an offset of 38mm. This means that the centre of the wheel/rim will be moved outwards from the wheel hub by 7mm compared to ET45 rims. You might want to use ET41 rims instead of ET38 or even ET45 rims, but I haven't seen ET45 steel rims.

Here's some 6.5Jx17 ET41 5x112 57.1 steel rims that would fit:

You can download the car manual here:

You can also access the car manual here (search for "manuals" in the search box):

If it was me, I would try ET38 rims as I can't imagine that Skoda would have made the car without at least 7mm clearance/allowance with ET45 rims and snowchains. You can get snow chains with locks larger than 9mm, so it's probably best to avoid those if clearances between the tyre and wheelarch are tight.

Something like the Thule K Summit chains might be suitable. They are designed for low clearance vehicles and have no inner clearance requirements.
