1.4 TSi DSG Power & Pickup slow

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just bought a 4 year old 1.4 TSi petrol DSG and just wanted to ask other 1.4 DSG users how their car picks up in normal drive mode from a junction.

I find mine lacks the oomph my previous car had and seems to go into high gears quite quickly.  Rather than stay in 1 or 2 for a while to give you the quick pickup it moves into 3 or 4 quite quickly.  So when I have my foot down to take off it fumbles through gears quite quickly and has a bit of a drag before going.  I hope all this makes sense.

I had a Mk 2 diesel 2.0 DSG before and I wasn't expecting a petrol to have the same torque but I thought it would be better than this.  The 1.4 150bhp is meant to be faster 0 - 60 than my old diesel and once it gets going it seems quite decent.

I took it to the main dealer who said it is probably stuck to the driving style of the previous owner who probably was happy with regular slow drives.  They disconnected the battery for an hour and said this should reset all the controls back to factory settings.  I think this has made it a bit better but I can still feel it.

I just wanted to know if others find this normal on the 1.4 DSG or have any ideas as to what could be the issue ?

Many Thanks in advance

?

How many miles has it covered and has it had any servicing.

New Spark Plugs or at least checked, new air filter.

It only sticks to the old driving style of past drivers until it gets a 'Dynamic Drive'.

Maybe get in some 99 ron petrol and after the spark plugs are changed and the air filter if dirty give it laldy.

PS

If the car is a 2015 with the DQ200 DSG i take it they checked at the Dealership that it was not one that should have the Service Campaign '34H5' on the DSG, that is a software update.

If there was a 'Reset' carried out then surely it was not outstanding.....

'The disconnecting the battery' to reset leads me to assume they did not plug the car in and are just leading you on and taking the pith.

Hi, I've got the 2014 1.4 TSi and it does get to 2nd gear very quickly on light throttle.  Typically this can bit a bit strange when you come to a junction or roundabout whilst still rolling (at only 1 or 2 mph) and then pull away again. In this instance the car will still be in 2nd gear and feels like it probably should have gone to 1st.

If you are in trip-tronic the car behaves differently and will put you in to 1st in this scenario.

When pulling away from a dead stop I find it changes to 2nd almost as soon as you are moving, say 2 or 3 mph perhaps.

Saying that, the most delay I find is down to the throttle pedal being very slow to respond. I guess this provides with a smooth feeling. Throttle response is better in Sport mode.

Overall though, from a standstill if you press your foot down enough the car does pull away like a stabbed rat!  If you give it plenty of throttle it holds on to 1st a lot longer before going to second.

PS: I don't believe the bit about it learning your driving style. I've never noticed it change the behaviour. You could reset older VAG boxes with VCDS or change the behaviour of the box because I did this.

A year back the Skoda dealer 'upgraded' the software on my DSG (without telling me) and it made the gear change very much like an old torque converter slush box. Urgh, horrible software that was.

I eventually managed to get it rolled back to the factory version for instance gear changes again.  I digress.

I would say compared to the 2.0 PD diesel Octavia I had the 1.4 petrol is quicker off the line with DSG. I only really miss the torque of the derv at motorway speeds.

Seems to like the car is doing what it should, in drive it does change to higher gears very quickly, mine is normally in 4th by about 25mph, it is a bit slow to kickdown but they are not built for speed but built for economy; that said put it in sport or tiptronic/manual mode and it has a amount of "oomph" and does get to speed pretty quick. mine does not flutter or fumble for gears when slowing down though and apart from roundabouts is mostly always in the right gear for what i want, all DSG's seem to to be in the wrong gear for quick pull away when rolling at roundabouts.

The DQ200 does have software the learns your style of driving but it's a bit limited, in the way it can't taylor it's self completely to how your drive.

Bought it in September from Main Dealer with 1 year warranty.  Done 23k miles and had a service done before put up for sale in Sept.

It's strange but the car was originally bought in Nov 2015 but the V5 says 2016 model.

When I took it back to the main dealer they told my they checked if it needed any software updates and they said it was up to date and just disconnected the battery to reset back to factory controls.

By Dynamic Drive do you mean take it for a bit of thrashing ?

Yes, the Mk2 Fabia Owners Manual in the section for the DSG told you about a 'Dynamic drive'.

So just take it out for a bit of a drive, use manual shifts for a while and also do kick downs, and some spirited sprints etc.

It does no harm and can do good.

You make it sound as if it is normal.  This is how mine behaves, it is in 3 at 15mph and 4 at 20mph ... I just thought this was way too soon.  Goes into 2 within a few seconds. Normally I would expect it to hold 1st until 10 mph.  Is this similar to yours on the other gears ?

Sport mode is nippy and holds gears longer but I didn't want to be in sport mode all the time due to fuel economy.  I just expected Drive mode to hold gears slightly longer almost feels no different to Eco mode.

Anyone else with experience of the 1.4 DSG gear changing able to comment also ?

Yes very similar, although mine does not "flutter" or fumble for gears, changes are nice and smooth up and down the gears in drive, sport and manual modes. 1st is only used to pull away from standstill, 2nd is when the box actually works from.

My car does not have eco mode, i have looked but it's not there (would not use it anyway, did not like it in the first couple of MK3 Octys i test drove)

If the "fluttering" continues with your DSG then as Root has said it may need a software update.
