Speedo gear decided to betray me.

Featured Replies

So yes it happens.

Had everything to perform a full transmission service. New 75w-80 valvoline GL4(or so I thought) , time and will.

Drained the transmission, went to pull out the speedo drive and boom there goes the gear.

Fell crooked into the gearbox and it was not retrievable.

Decided to top the transmission up either way.

My question is as follows,

The parts numbers catalogue is missing no16 part which is the gear.

It has the whole assembly as a part.

But I cannot find any place to buy it from.

Autodoc shows that it is unavailable, skoda parts will cost 4 for the part, 40 for the shipping.

So question no1 is just the gear available as a part and under what part number?

And if not do you know any shop that would ship with a reasonable cost?

Original part in Greece cost 30 euros.

Question no2 I've read that the gears will chew this plastic cog and turn it into dust.

This thing though got stuck in a place that would not allow the gearbox to shift into second nor reverse.

Do you think that it my stay on top of the shifting forks and cause premature damage? (note after wiggling the shifter it seems that it got free).

Question no3 should I change the oil again because it will get contaminated from plastic dust?

Question no4 vavoline seems to have updated their rating and the same product that was previously rated as GL4 is now rated as GL4 + should I therefore switch to something different? Or it is fine?

Many thanks.

Not sold separately.

Hardened steel will always win against plastic. Worst case scenario the pieces will interfere randomly for a while with the gear shifters.

The gearbox is not a Swiss watch. Changing the oil will not remove all plastic dust anyway.

I wouldn't be worried about it. It is GL4 with a marketing bait.

Although not necessary, for your peace of mind the gearbox has to be disassembled and cleaned. Not an easy job. It is your call.

If worst comes I have a spare gearbox.

And I can salvage any parts I want so I think I will skip the whole cleaning process.

Something else that came to mind

The other pre face-lift felicia speedo drive should not be compatible with my ring due to different splines design and number is that right ?

Also is there any chance that the plastic bits floating around will damage the plastic primary speedo gear on the diff ?

If yes then cleaning is a primary concern.

If not I  will just find the part and replace it as well as change the oil in about 20k km.

You have all the information. But don't ask for risk assessment from anyone. Everything is possible. It is your decision.

Hi ı have same problem. I have a 1997 felicia 1.6 aee engine. My mechanic dropped this speedgear into gear box . I bought a new one. Km working. My problem is in the 1 gear.  I can't use 1st gear. What should ı do? Please help.

Describe in more detail the problem.

the vehicle engages very little in first gear. if I don't hold it with my hand it throws. There is no problem with other gears. Could the metal part of the km gear be stuck somewhere?
Would it be useful if I changed the gear drive shaft under the vehicle?

Possible reasons are, in this order:

  • sloppy or bent gear shifter linkage
  • faulty clutch
  • bad gearbox

Thanks a lot.  Can we stick this speedgear avoid dropping!

No because it has to slide up and down and depending on where this gear falls the car may not shift into a gear for me it was secong but after some wiggling it got free and sunk to the bottom
