Waiting for Skoda Assist

Featured Replies

Started the car this afternoon and unless I was seeing things I'd swear the steering wheel moved on its own. Lots of orange lights and 6 errors on ABS/stabilisation control, start stop, hill hold assist, front assist, tyre pressure loss indicator and park pilot. It did start and drive but once round the block was enough as the steering didn't feel right either. After turning off there's a strange noise rumbling away too. Skoda Assist could have come out quicker but happy to wait a bit longer for a Vauxhall/VW technician as they say they have more diagnostic gear on board. Wonder if it's a failing battery (everything on our Panda goes weird if the battery gets a bit flat), production date 31 October 2018 so not very old. Hope it's not a sign of things to come. Will update later.

If you have self parking then yeh, it is possible the steering wheel moved by itself if the car was having a wee turn ( no pun intended ). It could well be a failing battery but then again I've had electrical gremlins on another make of car and after 6mths of it going in/out of the garage, they put it down to an airflow sensor. That's modern electronics for you.

UPDATE - Mice

A VWG technician duly arrived, did some diagnostics and had a poke about and diagnosed something I've read about on here, rodent damage !  Apparently chewed one of the abs cables, part been ordered and will be with him tomorrow when he'll return to fit. Call out and fitting free but parts will have to be paid for but not too horrendous probably about £60. Pleased it is something that can be seen rather than something in the electrics. Not the first time the technician had seen this. Never had any issues with mice and cars before - is there something extra tasty about VWG's wiring? Very disappointed with our cats, normally they're out disposing of mice in the night but with this cold weather they're spending too much time indoors. Quite impressed with Skoda Assist though.

A quick search on 'Mice' and found someone said they like the soya coating on the wiring?

One rodent mangled abs cable. Now have a ultrasonic mouse deterrent under the bonnet and given quite a few spots a spray with some mouse repellent that's supposed to put them off chewing cables but hopefully it was a one off. Very impressed with Skoda Assist, I did think the VWG technician that turned up looked awfully young but he'd done 3 years at college with a further 2 years practical experience before being sent out in a van. He was excellent and certainly knew his Audi's, VW's and Skodas and was totally current with knowledge and skills. The cable is common to a number of models and the local VW parts store has sold 3 this year due to rodent or fox damage.

Pleased to hear that it was fairly easily sorted out. Can I ask - was the car kept in a garage or was it left outside, how is the ultrasonic deterrent powered, and what's the spray stuff?

Thanks StEd

Was it a Rentokil van that turned up? :giggle:

The car's left outside as the garage is full of gear for our bees and chickens so no room for a car. The spray is 'Big Cheese anti mouse lacquer'. It has a bit of a niff to it when sprayed but supposedly leaves a bad taste which discourages rodents, hopefully before they take too big a bite. Supposed to last 6 months and it might in the engine bay where we found mouse droppings in the battery tray but as they eat the wires in the front arch I can't see it lasting there once I've driven through a puddle. The ultrasonic mouse repeller is supposedly internal only (I wrapped the joins in insulating tape). Runs off a PP3 battery. Stuck to the top of the fuse box in the engine compartment with sticky velcro. It emits a high pitched squeak every 8 seconds, using a bat detector this is audible everywhere in the engine compartment and the front wheel arches. Googling seems to suggest they have an initial effect but mice learn to put up with it. As I don't expect  mice to be there for long either because the car moves or the cats chase them off I'm hoping it might work. But then it could have been a one off as none of my neighbours have ever had their wiring eaten so might be a one off.

I hope your 'Big Cheese' kit works better than the 'Big Cheese Live Trap'.....the mice just wander in, take the bait and wander out again.....complete waste of a £10 for me.....I'm back to killing the buggers with some proper metal traps.
