1.4 Twincharger Specialists Recommendations

Number One Daughter has been told by the Doc to apply to get her licence back, but rather than give her her mk1 back, I was thinking of getting her a mk2, and giving the mk1 to my son, who is learning in it just now.

I know alot of the history of the issues with the twincharger, hence I bought @Brimma's mk2 Replica rather than a real vrs when I was looking for one for my beloved to drive.

Long story short, I am looking for one, and have come across a couple which have engine problems, a green hatch, VA11 BVO in Birmingham and a Race Blue Estate in Aldershot, WF60 KDV, in case anyone recognises the registrations and has some info.

The blue one doesn't state any info in the advert, but at the low price I am assuming issues, the green one states engine knock.  I am not scared of the issues, but would rather use a company well versed with the engine, rather than my normal, which is bring it up here to the garage I have been using for the past 15 years for all my cars and vans.  I am considering making an offer taking account of my assumption they will need major work.  Taking worst case scenario that it's a rebuild job, I would also fit some upgrades, based on Lucifers' guide, which would only be sensible.

Anyone have any recommendations, and any experience and approximate costs for a rebuild? Not fussed about location, have car will travel and all that, more concerned about quality and value for money.

If I take the plunge and it ends up being something much cheaper I, or rather, she will have won, and if it does need rebuilt, then it will be fresh and reliable for many years to come.

Cheers M'Dears

Too much of a gamble taking one on with an engine issue and you not being able to be sure there is no DSG issue.

A member here might have a good one that they would like to sell.

The ones I am looking at are around £2k, hence I am internally estimating about the same again for an engine rebuild, with a slight overhead if the turbo is buggered.  If others have had it done and my guesstimate is close, then I suppose the cost of getting the DSG overhauled at the same time, or if buggered replaced with a used and overhauled unit might not be out of the question.

Both cars are stated as driving, and I wouldn't consider it without test driving them then doing a bit of negotiating, if it is engine and box, then I might just wait and get one through Skoda with extended warranty as they usually have one kicking about in the network.
