Frozen door latch..

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced their drivers door catch freezing in the open position following opening the door in cold UK temps?

Everytime it's at freezing point, after opening the drivers door the latch freezers mid way preventing me closing the door as the latch bashes against the door anchor...

Any tips how to prevent this from occurring as the latch looks plastic coated...

It's causing me mega delays on cold mornings!

Not seen this on here before but my friend had this issue with his Audi A6, apparently it's quite common on those.  I'll message him and ask him what the fix was.

OT...said friend has used a Superchips Bluefin to remap his car, he didn't return it to stock (not that it would have mattered) when he took it to the dealers to have this lock issue investigated, the dealer he used scanned the car and the remap was detected.  He got a very snotty letter from Audi asking him why he'd broke the terms of his finance agreement and advising him his 6 month old car no longer has a warranty.  He had to quickly settle the finance on the car or risk some serious fall out.

Had the problem 2 years ago.  In my case there was too much grease in the latch mechanism.  The grease retained pockets of water that on freezing provided sufficient friction to stop the latch moving freely. I presume you can easily move it with finger pressure.  I used some "copy WD40" with a thin tube on the spray nozzle to wash away the grease.  My only concern was if the lubricant would affect any rust proofing inside the door but I took the risk.  Problem hasn't recurred.  Pain to diagnose since I never experienced it when de-icing the car first  thing in the morning but only after driving  - first time it happened was after driving for 5 minutes!

Had a message back from my friend.  "Inspect, clean and re-grease" was all he knows of the work carried out.  He said it's not happened since.
