Temp gauge goes all the way up

Featured Replies

Hi all I'm new to this I have just bought a Skoda fabia 2007 1.2 6 valve for £100 he was going to scrap it I drove it about 15 miles no problems what so ever I thought I had picked a bargain then all of a sudden it changes haha so to start with the temp gauge went upto 110 and then the engine management light came on and then it sort of went into limp mode as if it was mis firing what I then had to do was turn it off while driving and turn it back on every time I would slow down the power would lose so I had to keep turning it off and on I don't really want to be buying parts of it's not the cause does anybody have any thoughts or had the same issue in the past thank you in advance

You have just bought an expensive PITA lemon. The seller had to pay a lot more to get rid of it yet you decided it is OK to lose money instead. The car has a head gasket failure. You are now one of many in a long queue of gullible buyers hungry for bargains that got burned instead.

I won't really lose on it then will I as I'll scrap it but thanks for being honest haha

With the scrapage offers coming back, park it up for 90 days and enjoy it's 4k value on trade in ;)

More has been lost on a friday night, than a £100 for a possibly ok car. The fact it ran for a bit ... it might be something simple, but what it is, I've no idea.

Get it checked out and find out the problems and look on the bright side

Yeah I'm gonna get it plugged in Monday see what it reads if it's too much I'll go for the scrappage I think I'll keep you updated

I'd hope if you have just bought a £100 car that you know a bit about cars and can sort it out, otherwise paying others to sort it out could cost a bit.

Edit:- though you mentioning "gonna get it plugged in" to find out what is wrong sounds a bit like I'm completely wrong there.

Ofcourse I know Abit about cars but for the temp gauge to shoo right up and be a misfire I just thought someone might have had the same issue but I'll plug it in probs change the temp sensor and buy a few coils for it with spark plugs the cheaper option first

Perhaps a silly question, but have you checked the coolant and or oil levels?!

Yes it was the first thing I done

I hope  that you are diving in and trying to work out what is okay before paying to getting the stored fault codes read - reading fault codes is not always going to provide good pointers.

Well I'm thinking of going euro car parts in the morning buying 3 coil leads 3 spark plugs an a temp sensor see what happens with that first unless you got any other idea I can change that's simple and cheap enough

Whereabouts are you? Try unplugging the engine temperature sensor to see if there's fluid in the connection.

Ok and what if there is or what if there isn't?

Well if there is, it might be an explanation of the temp gauge behaviour.

Also try opening the expansion tank cap first thing in the morning (before starting engine) to see if there is residual pressure in there (shouldn't be any).
