Thinking of swapping Vrs, Will I miss it?!

Hi guys I need some advice.

Basically my Vrs has been faultless and I love practically everything about it. However recently I feel it is being a bit wasted and possibly Id be better off with a 2nd hand car I could buy outright.

I use the Vrs basically once every 5 days when im working on shift. It main job is the 120 mile trip to work then i stay at work so it doesnt move. When im off it does the odd journey locally.

As the main trip is just sitting on the motorway and dont get most out of the car (just stick cruise on to get good mpg!) I was wondering do you reckon I should change the Vrs.

I am finding the repayments okish but would like to have that extra money to spend or save how i choose. Also this could be a good time to sell the Fabia as they seem to be getting a bit cheaper.

The main question is.....Do you think if I bought a Bora TDI 130 Sport and remapped it I will miss the Vrs. Im thinking same engine is the same so it cant be too different?!? Although I will miss the xenons for sure!!

What do you all think, anyone driven a bora or maybe a passat 130 might be ok?

Saw your post about my Polo. They're certainly worth looking at - quite rare in GTi spec is what caught my eye. Not as economical as a vRS clearly, but a 39MPG combined is quoted. Pulls well through the gears and handles very well indeed. And you would keep your Xenons, in addition full climate and 6CD :cool:

I looked at the Bora myself and just seemed like a bit of a generic box to me - nothing to excite me really. I'd say the same about the Passat. I know the Polo hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but I reckon they look quite classy for a small car...

Depends what you're after of course - the Polo won't be the greatest motorway companion as it gets a bit noisy at constant m/way speeds. Horses for courses, as ever.

I only use my vRS on odd occasions. Unlike many I didn't buy it because I do a high mileage and need a Diesel, I bought it because of it's blend of qualities and value and because I like the look of them in a weird sort of way (never quite sure whether it's ugly or beautiful??!!!). I think the best thing you can do is test drive a few cars, and have a look at the overall condition of cheaper cars. You will soon make your mind up which way you want to go.

Bora is a nice mile muncher but has no more room inside (my Dad has one) and is a bit dull unless kitted out with big wheels and desperately needed uprated suspension. I would go for a Leon if I were in your shoes, as it has a bit of style and a half decent chassis, but having said that I've had a Leon Cupra and still like my Furby just as much.

You could sell the vRS and go for a TDI Fabia, with cruise control etc.

Should save on insurance etc as well.

The TDI will still give you some performance to keep you happy on the day's off to:thumbup:

I'm in a simmilar situation now as my vRS is basically just doing my 5 miles to work and back. Now that I own it outright, I can change it for a new Sport which will be far more suited to the driving I am doing now with the benefit that I don't need to finance it :)

I think I'll miss the vRS for... oh.... a week, while I get used to driving petrol again.

At the end of the day it takes a while to get used to a lower spec car. I choppe din my ITR for a 1.8 Astra and was expecting to hate it, but the worse part is the bit you're doing now! Once you've actually made the change you start thinking "its only a car" etc. and soon get used to it.

Just think of what you can do with the money you'll be saving from not making repayments.

I'm sure you'll miss it, and it will probably miss you too:( :( :(

I only do 1 mile there and 1 mile back so could easily use a push-bike and save a fortune, but as mentioned before there are no prizes for being the richest corpse in the graveyard.

Probably because you can get the same engine and performance, but for less money. As they're not that loved (Golfs with boots never are in the UK for some reason :confused:) you get more for your money, and they've been around longer.

But I agree, if you're going to change, make it something a bit more different. Otherwise you might find yourself thinking of it as second best - never a good thing with a car purchase.

I p/x'd the R32 for the vRS for that very reason... I used it once a week if I was lucky, somtimes I didn't drive it for 2 weeks or more and only then did I take it out for a thrashing!!!!

I now use the vRS 4-5 days a week so its worth while, but I do mkiss the R32, so I[m guessing you'll miss the vRS.

But it will be like breaking up with ya bird, after a while the memories will fade and you'll forget what it was like to drive or the feel or sound.

A car is a lump of metal at the end of the day, so don't hold onto it if it financially not worth it........... you can always get another if you want to!

Thanks for all the advice guys, is actually really helping.

Steve you spot on why I fancy the bora as same engine and performance, but for less money appeals.

Also what i didnt mention is im not too bothered if its a boring drive as I just sit on the motorway and my brothe and I have nearly finished creating this....(see pic) which is pretty fun (is getting lowered soon!!).

I know where you're coming from as I went through exactly the same thought process when I had to contemplate having to buy another UK car (I was supposed to me moving abroad for work, hence my vRS sale).

I'm understanding a bit more where you're coming from now, and especially if you've got a fun car like that to play with, it shifts the decisions slightly :)

For a m/way car with a reasonable amount of poke combined with economy, the Bora's ideal. I'd take one out for a test, see what you think. Check the Passat too, you *might* find you can find a PD115/130 for Bora money. Both will be easily upto the task, as two of our field engineers do 30k+ annually - in a Bora and a Passat! :thumbup:

Ordered my Sport this morning :)

This is probably the final week of vRS driving. He's been such a trooper over his 2.5 yrs with no problems at all. Whoever buys him will have got a cracker!

The Bora is an interesting proposition - I'd recommentd it. I ran a 1.6 for over 4 years before getting the vRS. The PD130 version would be an idea motorway mile eater. I regularly did 250 mile trips in mine and it was quiet and comfortable. The engine was a bit noisy at a fast cruise but a TDI would be far better than the 1.6 (3600rpm @ 70mph!). The Bora drives better than the Mk4 Golf as it has a stiffer body and suspension and it's quieter at speed . It's better equipped and costs less than an equivalent Golf secondhand. Oh and the boot is massive.

Adam, if you only use the car once every 5 days, does it have to be a diesel?

A 1.8 petrol won't be at all bad on MPG doing motorway cruising. I am not sure how much you'd pay to pick one up but I had a Corsa 1.8 SRi over a weekend shortly after they were released. I found it to be a nice quick little car, and IIRC, group 9 insurance like the vRS.

They come with Cruise Control also.

I remember being quite impressed by it at the time...

Ask Gayle I think she changed her vRS for a Bora 130 highline?
