Cambelt

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have 15 plate Skoda Octavia. 1.6 elegance.

I do around 40,000 miles a year.

How often should I change the cambelt?
Thanks

On a 2.0 it was 120k miles (or 4 years according to Skoda UK etc (but not it appears other countries)

my water pump and a pulley failed (Started making grinding/ rattling noises) before then though, so I got it done around 80k

I changed both at 80,000 and it’s now coming up to 160,000. Wanted to try and stretch it out so I can get it done after Christmas.

looks like I’ll have to get it done this month which is a pain.

Contact Skoda and give them your VIN.

The reason I say this is nowhere will you find a definitive answer. I can show you a Skoda garage saying 4yr or a Skoda garage saying 5yr. You can have 60k, 80k, 90k, 100k, 130k and 140k - take you pick, just depends on where you look and who you speak to.

Perhaps this sums up just how stupid and confusing the intervals are.

There's a skoda dealer in Lurgen, NI.  I don't know what they'll tell you but it's likely to be 5yr or 80k miles, whichever comes first.  50 miles away, just over the border there's a dealer in Carrickmacross. If you contact them they're likely to say every 210km ( that's 130k miles). And it doesn't matter about time.

Bonkers isn't it?

This is not an official line, just my opinion....

If it’s not got a problem currently, just get the garage to pop the lid off the belt cover and check the condition.

if good, wait until the next service or belt interval with additional checks.

if not or you want to do it, do it, but do the water pump, coolant and pulley/tensioner kit too.

Apologies for a naive question - is the 2.0 petrol vRS engine a cambelt or a chain?

Chain.

Thanks.
