Octavia heating issues

Long story short, got an octavia that has nearly no heating in the car. The car had a leaking water pump so i just changed that out along with the timing belt and front crank seal as that had failed too.

The car had heating issues before doing the belt and even after doing the water pump and belt it still persists.

 

Pressure tested the coolant system and all seems well, heater matrix gets hot as do both radiator hoses.

 

Things ive noticed,

Idles at 1100rpm when hot, sometimes if you give the throttle a blip itl drop down to about 800rpm 

Coolant reserviour is heavily discoloured and it smells like out of date smokey bacon? I have another CR engine with the same problem aswell..

Doesnt over heat at all, gauge sits perfectly at 90c, verified with the scan tool aswell.

 

What i did notice was the charge cooler water temp was only 50c, there was 2 temperature readings from the charge cooler, both reading 50c, but if the engine was revved one temperature would climb and the other would stay at 50c.

 

Ive never had to do much work on these engines apart from timing belts and basic servicing etc so im unsure where to start with my diagnosis, with the coolant being routed so many different ways, along with electric and mechanical water pumps its a bit of a head scratcher

Search blocked heater matrix and/or burst silica gel bag on here, e.g.:

 

 

 

 

If the matrix is getting hot, but that heat's not transferring into the cabin, surely that's either the internal heating flaps are closed when they should be open, or the fan.  Do you have airflow coming in to the car?

 

Can you hear the flaps moving when adjusting the airflow direction in the car?

Hot air will come through the vents briefly if you leave the heating off for a while, needs the heat to build up first though. After about 30 second of hot air it slowly gets cold again.

Tried using dual control on and off but no change in symptoms

Worth a shot to reset the flaps

I do think its a blockage at this stage from what people have mentioned here, i took the matrix out and cleaned it to find lots of debris and brown liquid in it.

After cleaning the matrix the situation improved but its still not 100%, since doing that the coolant level in the reservior has dropped twice, so i think whatever is blocking it is slowly being moved about

 

Il try calibrate the flaps though because ive also noticed that the passenger side vent closest to the window doesnt seem to close, regardless of where you adjust the slide to it constantly blows air..
