Gearbox - Opinions and Advice Please

Featured Replies

Hi All!

Yes another gearbox thread ! I bought my 05 vRS last March and I knew the gearbox had "gone soft"

My commute is 70 miles a day and with a fair degree of mechanical sympathy it has lasted so far ! Yesterday I was getting up to speed for the motorway when she jumped out of 5th ! I immediately reached for 6th and it was not sounding good at all !

Now 5th sounds like there are teeth out of the cogs and on the downshift to 3rd I have to double clutch or it squeals and/or locks !! This long lost skill I acquired from an uncle's 1930 Ford Model A !

Now then I'd dosen t take a calculator to work it out !!

I have a gearbox from a 06 vRS which I intend to fit fairly soon but I need your advice on 3 items

1 Gearbox brace bracket

2 Steel selector forks

3 4th gear support

Like all surviving mk1 vRS Fabias mine is slightly breathed on probably stage 1 if you like

She is a great little warrior and although it's hard miles she has been super!

While the box is there now I will get the bits and struggle on - I have the DMF and Sachs SRE clutch ready to fit !

Now then is it worth stripping the new box , fitting the upgraded bits and putting new bearings and seals in or just putting the new box in with the new clutch and DMF

Any advice on my next move as there's only so long the damaged box will last !!

Thanks a million in Advance

Donal

If you need the car back on the road ASAP you should just swap the boxes and clutch since that work can all be done in a day.

If you want to strip and rebuild a gearbox then do it to the damaged one, you can take it to a specialist and have any upgrades done at the same time.

Jason (Devonutopia) had work done on his. First to install LSD, then to fix the selectors falling apart (rivets). Quite a while ago and I can't reliably search/find his content.

Did he do it himself?

Well, you know Jason... ;)

Yup, chequebook tuner, plus he was running well over 300 bhp so gearbox strengthening mods and LSD were essential, not just desirable.

I was kidding, I just wondered at the relevance of your quote and reply.

The stories of his gearbox woes and upgrades were there with piccies. Might be helpful. That I can't find those topics or posts now might be down to my search-fu being inadequate or that the topics are old enough to have fallen off the back of the forum software upgrade wagon.

Thanks a mill Lads as always ! Unfortunately here in Galway we are very short on proper expertise unless you want a new car !

I like to stockpile items first if I know a job is coming - I got the box for £100 - I really fancied a Sachs SRE clutch kit and new DMF but didn't know how I could float this idea - a friend of my missus horrible Puggy 5008 duly ate it's clutch and it took €1400 to sort so I used this figure as a ballpark and nowt was said !!

I've lined my trusted indie Dave up to change the box and clutch/DMF after Christmas !

I'd love to see the pics and write up of Jason's exploits as I said I'm on my own over here and any info I can get is goldust ! I could never have sorted the heater without yous lot !

Thanks again lads

Well the story of nursing the gearbox ended in failure this afternoon - I got a date for next week but alas she stopped- suspected broken input shaft as the gearbox rattled in neutral now it's silent whether the clutch is in or out !

I got a tow to Clonberne so she is now awaiting TLC

Hi All

The strip down was interesting ! All notions of building a gearbox from the damaged one have faded ! The post mortem revealed that one of the bearings collapsed and broke the casing emptying the oil - I didn't realise this and drove on ! The clutch disc then broke up probably due to the stress of a seizing gearbox !

The lad who is working at the car called me a right pig for driving the car on ! I told him if he would have got off his behind before Christmas then this would have been avoided 🤣

All back on the road and really doing great - The SRE clutch is just superb. Really direct. The gearbox I got from Traynors is 100%. Every gear is there, no crunching, no whining. At idle its silent....!!

James found a few small issues with a vacuum line leak but had a 05 Octy for stripping so was able to get the lines from her. Found a broken connection to the radiator fan as well.

I am going to strip the damaged box and see how it goes together and see how much of a mess is inside !

Lads thanks very much for your guidance and advice - Wee car is now better than ever

I really have to get the dash built up again
