1.9 tdi with 5 speed rpm at 70mph

Featured Replies

Anyone know what rpm the engine is at when doing 70mph in 5th gear? I do a lot of motorway miles and wanna know how loud it'll be when cruising on the motorway

If the gearing is the same my Octy, 2_400rpm at 70mph actual. I can't help with noise levels though, because those are also dependent on trim, and on tyre make and wear.

Octavia has bigger tyres because it's a Golf not a Polo so I doubt they're the same.

Do you reckon the fabia would be higher than 2400? Can't imagine it'd be that much higher, a diesel running at 2400+ rpm at 70 seems a bit ridiculous

No, the Fabia will have a taller final drive ratio than the Octavia so it's probably less RPM, maybe 2200 or so, however it won't be noisy so nothing to worry about.

That's what I hoped.

Did a bit of maths based on a dynochart I found and it seems to do 30.3 mph per 1000 rpm in 5th, putting it at ~2310rpm at 70mph.

Had a quick check locally in mine . Nothing accurate to read, as road was busy, but I'd put it at circa 1500 @40 (or45) I  remember I used to buzz up the M6 at 70 ( and beyond ) a few years ago and neither of us had problems with the noise levels. Unfortunately Haynes does not list ratios on models any more. I'd put the engine noise as loud enough for brisky motoring, but quiet enough as not to be a problem .
