Exhaust options for Sportline 280

Featured Replies

Looking at upgrading exhaust on my 280 so I'm curious what options have other owners opted for. Is custom made the way to go or anyone can suggest anything else? Cheers

I'm also interested in an exhaust change.

The other week I had a towbar fitted and whilst the bumper was off, I noticed a sensor attached to the right hand tail pipe on the drivers side. What is this for? How is this sensor bypassed when fitting an after market system?

Thanks

Are you sure it was a sensor and not the power supply for the valved side of the exhaust?

Ahh. Now I understand. Thanks for that.

Got quoted 1500quid for custom catback without valves which seems a bit steep...don't mind paying right money for good work though, but never paid more than 700 for ready fit miltek or custom made on previous vrs...

I went to exhaustsuk.com yesterday and they quoted me 1000 for a stainless cat back system. This would be without the centre resonator and valves.

On its' own, to replace the centre resonator with a straight stainless pipe would cost 165 quid.

I asked about changing the down pipe, and the guy there said it wouldn't be worth it unless I was considering a serious power upgrade.

I did mention that I am planning to have a remap, and he said that they have just entered the remapping scene, even though they don't advertise this yet as it's in it's infancy.

I left my number, and he'll be calling me next week with a price.

Boredom lead me to read on the seat cupra forums.

Some folks on there have been changing their back boxes for golf r ones because the golf boxes give a sportier sound.

As the 280 back boxes are vw too, and I suspect passat ones at that, I wonder if it's possible that the golf r estate boxes would fit the superb?

Read about it somewhere where people changed just back boxes with good result... Will be interested to see

I've successfully done this.  It wasn't cheap though; I could only source a Golf R exhaust with the optional car attached. 😊

The R exhaust is much more vocal than the 280's. I'm not actually sure why the 280 has valves, IME there's no discernible difference when open/closed.  The R 7.5 estate which doesn't have valves offers some nice DSG farts on down/up shifts but also settles down at motorway speeds, no drone at all.  Note the the Mk7 estate doesn't have the same exhaust system as the 7.5 nor the 7/7.5 hatchbacks.  It's a single exit pipe with a Y piece tail pipe attached,  so out of the 4 tips at the rear only 2 will be used and it doesn't sound as nice, so there's a few on the used market as a result.

Whilst the Cupra and Golf R's systems are interchangeable it would be interesting to see if they would fit the 280; I doubt it as otherwise companies such as Scorpion and Milltek would advertise that they sell them, seeing as they would already have them for other MQB cars.  Like suspension components I think you'd have to look at what's available on the Passat rather than the Golf as you've already mentioned above.

What's the reason for the new exhaust, noise, improved flow, aesthetics?

Just another thought....it might be worth waiting a few months as the Arteon R will be launched soon.  That might prompt exhaust fabricators to expand their offerings; it may also have a nice factory system which could be a direct bolt on to the Superb.

Get ya mate....

It's really just a noise tbh, i do understand that superb may not be the most popular car for mods hence why the lack of straight forward options, basically on the odd occasion i do put it in S-mode i wish the car did sound bit more aggressive, don't want it to sound like A45 in Race mode because it would spoil it but just more dsg farts really...

Found this option too....

This week I discovered how small the world is. My son knows the owner of a company called naw automotive (they have a facebook page), so when im driving again, I will pay them a visit.

They probably believe there's no market for the superb 280, which is why they haven't done anything about it.

I think you are the chosen one mr penguin. The special one.

Couldn't you p...p....p.... pickup your tape measure and measure your golf's boxes for us? Surely its only a case of adapting the pipework? Pretty please :)

Oh I’m special alright 🤪

I’ll take some measurements, sure. I just need to collect the R first. At least another 4 weeks 😞

I've made some more enquiries regarding the golf r estate back boxes. A pair of Scorpion boxes can be bought for 400 quid. Millteks are 540. Tailpipes are extra.

Another thought - Why not cut open the back boxes and replace the perforated pipes with straight ones and seal the boxes back up?

That's actually getting more reasonable... Are they for 280 specifically or is that for R 7.5 estate? That's brilliant info cheers bro

I went for a full custom job from a fabricator near me. I wanted it noticably loud but not OTT and even with no boxes and a tiny res it isn't that loud tbh! It does however drone which I will need changing but thats a job for winter! I went for Rs4 style tips.

Looks great buddy, got video of it at all? How much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking?

 Around £800 all in.

From what I've seen of other custom exhausts, that looks like a very nice job! There's so much space under there to work - especially without the back boxes. Enjoy 😁

It sounds really nice i do like it...sounds beefier than 1.5....

Would you say that only deleting back boxes on 280 would give any improvement?
