error workshop only leave vehicle in position p

Featured Replies

Got the above error today. Two months out of warranty. Googling it reveals it may need a new gear shift, coming in at around £1,000.

It seems to make no difference too the running of the car, just get that message popping up.

It seems that there's a technical bulletin about it, I found one for the Golf, but it doesn't say it should be repaired free out of warranty. Maybe there may be a goodwill payment but I'm not holding my breath.

First 5 threads that show with a google of the title you posted are all Briskoda threads.

The first thread is Briskoda, the next two are Volkswagen. I'm not really sure what you are trying to add to the discussion anyway.

There is not much to add.

It is a known issue, known to VW Group so VW, Skoda, SEAT and Audi.

There is TPI's because of this but since with your car it is out of Manufacturers Warranty talk with Skoda UK Customers Services if a Dealership Master Tech does not support going to Skoda for a Gesture payment.

You have to ask, ask in writing and know that many Dealerships or staff at them try to blow you off, you have to talk with the Importer which is Skoda UK since it is a known issue.

Thanks for your advice. It looks like a long hard trudge for me. The optional five year guarantee is beginning to look like good value now! Shame I didn't take it. 😪

Mine threw the same message at me a month out if warranty. Spent £50 getting skoda to tell me what the internet already had. Goes in on 4th jan with a courtesy car booked for the week!

I mentioned goodwill etc. Hoping that doing it sooner rather than later will count in my favour. Full fsh all on time except the dsg oil change. ( i wasnt the owner then) We will see.

Lots of octavia discussion but not seen the issue on the superb 3 area before facet edges post.

The warning has disappeared now. I won't be asking for a repair until I have to.

The diagnostic check is a real money spinner for them. They warned me I would be liable to pay when my radio didn't work if they couldn't find anything wrong.

Good news - thank you skoda. Update on my work to repair the error only leave vehicle in position P. Had been booked a courtesy car for the week which was worrying but had the call today (2 days in the shop) to say it was ready.  It was one month out of warranty, Skoda dealer said they could only ask about goodwill if they had the car ie no pre-emptive agreement so i was braced for the worst. Anyway skoda uk paid for all parts and 50% of the labour time. 3.99 hours billed to do the change. Skoda paid for 2 I paid for 1.99! At £102 p/h very happy. Main mechanism was £336 I think plus vat and then lots of bolts and other bits on the parts list. Reckon it would gave been touching 900-1000 all in for me to pay.

While not actually written on my bill they also re greased ( having done originally at 3 year service 2 months ago ubder warranty) rear wishbones (quote internal notes) as per service bulletin which seems to have made wide speed bumps and mini roundabouts quieter. It also said something about white grease used as 'special' grease not available.

They've just kept me as a service customer for a couple of years at least. Faith in customer service restored!

Same here, as mine is well out of warranty, though car has only done 33,300 miles in just over 4 years. Haven't seen warning for a few weeks, but no doubt it will come back. Doesn't seem to be getting any worse, and doesn't spoil enjoyment of car. (not suggesting other's don't have it worse)

Mine has started again so I have booked it in to be looked at.

I have contacted Skoda customer services and they are going to phone my garage when they have looked at it. Early days but Skoda didn't flatly refuse a goodwill payment so I live in hope.

Decided to do it now as I probably have a better case it being only only three months out of warranty.

Honestly, this whole issue is a shocker.

I had it on my previous Skoda (an Octy) and was told by the dealer then that it was a known problem on DSGs. The numerous threads on different forums bear this out and yet still it goes on!

What does it take for VAG to wake up to the fact that reputations take ages to build but can crumble in the blink of an eye?

The workshop said I needed a new shifter.£550 for the parts and £695 for the labour!

He looked on his computer and it said no goodwill. I said I had contacted Skoda UK and they were going to phone him.

Skoda contacted him and said that there was a 75% goodwill discount so I am paying £310 instead of £1245 so that's a bit of a result for me. 😊

Hmm bit worried myself now,I bought mine 3 weeks ago on a 16 plate and I’ve had this message twice, thought nothing of it as just pinged up then went off 🙈. Tho was bought from approved ŠKODA so will phone tomorrow.

Should be covered by approved warranty? If not goodwill seems common on this. Interesting differences in cost and dealer approach with facet edge. With 100% parts and 50% labour (2 hrs of 3.99) as goodwill mine cost £202. (£85 /hr). I mentioned goodwill so it was written on the workshop sheet, seems the service manager will also be proactive if he thinks its a possibility. Skoda dibt pay retail labour rates but I reckon the returning customers for standard work makes up for it? I know I will for a couple of years at least.

Just got the car back yesterday for west end Škoda Edinburgh, can’t fault them at all, got a nice 69plate 2.0L tdi Octavia sportsline to run around in for 2 days.

Total cost to me was £0 Phew 🤪👍🏻 Mind did tell them if any costs were to be incurred to me they can take the car back lol.

It's caused by a switch on top of the gearbox. The switch fails to update the gear position so you get that error message.

There is nothing wrong with the gearbox and it will continue to work, you just get this error message.

It's a known fault with all VW group dsg's and you should be able to get a contribution on the repair. It is expensive as they have to take the gearbox selector out from underneath the car to get to the switch.

I suggest you contact Skoda Customer care to find out how much they will contribute.

Hi Facet,

I greatly appreciate your response. Is it OK to call or write to them? What will I ask? I would appreciate if you can help me with this.

Again, big thanks!

You can call Skoda on +44-333-003-7504

Just wrote the error message you get.

If you read through this thread you will have a good idea of what to do.

Best deal with Skoda Ireland rather than Skoda UK.

Thanks root!

I've watch a video on YouTube from Tech Automotive,  he just changed the chip or circuit under the gear stick with same problem.

https://youtu.be/qb0MkXR5-Dw

This is something that happens, particularly if the car has not been used regularly.

The problem is caused by a sticky microswitch but, from personal experience of two cars with that problem, you can safely ignore it providing you are prepared to put up with the warning showing up intermittently.

You may find that the more you use the car the less the warning appears.

I wanted to add the I had this issue on my old Octavia. I'd been to the supermarket and had my car valeted by the firm down there. Turned out one of the people had a bit of a thing for really drowning the shifter cover in a lot of detergent spray. This had caused the issue and I was also given a fairly steep price for fixing it. In the end of traded the car in with the fault.
