Ugly circle on my Kodiaq's dashboard

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I really hope that someone has an idea how to fix it because I'm really depressed about it.

Twi says ago I used a phone stand with a stickey base and put it on the dashboard.

Yesterday I wanted to readjust it a bit so I removed it and saw the bad news.

It left an ugly circle on my dashboard.

It is 2 degrees outside so no sun or anything...

I guess that the sticky part removed a microscopic mate layer from the dashboard and now it's shine.

Please look at the photos and tell me if you have any ideas how to make it better.

Thank you in advance!

A-G

I usually use the foaming upholstery cleaner on s/h vehicles agitated with a soft scrubbing brush to get into all the grooves, this will take all the existing product off and make the dash uniform.

Then use a dashboard cleaner, many of them are silicone based and will restore the shine, if you want it a satin finish then use sparingly and wipe it off fairly quickly.

Probably a daft question, but have you previously used any type of product on the dashboard ? If so, it could be that the product you used is marked rather than the dashboard.

Failing that, I find it difficult to believe that your sticky phone holder has removed anything from the dash. I think it's more likely that your phone holder has left something on the dash.

With that in mind, the first thing I'd try before using a chemical based cleaner, is a light, soapy solution e.g. a bit of Fairy liquid mixed with water. Just try it in very small area first to see how it goes.

If that doesn't work, personally I'd take it to a car valeter/detailer with a good reputation (not a back street eastern European set up) and ask their advice.

If you decide to go the DIY route, try whatever product you decide on in an inconspicuous area of the same material. If you open either front door, you'll notice that there's a small area of the dashtop material on the edge of the dash, before it transitions to a harder type of plastic, where the air bag switch is. Try it there.

With regard to phone holders, if you must have one on top of the dash, either get a bean bag type holder that just sits there, or the type that sticks to the windscreen and has a long flexible arm. I'm sure there's other types as well that don't have to be stuck anywhere.

Thank you! I will search for more info on those materials.

Thank you!!

The car is a few months old, I never used any liquid product on the dash, but I used wet wipes which are designed for matte surface. It's a maybe, I will try it first (need to buy them) and report back.

For the 2nd point, unfortunately, the sticky thing, it didn't leave any residue on the dash, it removed a thin matte coat for sure (checked with microscope)

If the first option won't work, I'll search for a detailer in Berlin, I hope I'll find a decent one.

Thank you for the ideas, at least I have something to try and hope.

Happy new year!!

Try premo dressing. It's widely used by car detailers and it is professional product to use on this type of applications.
