Ford 1.0 ecoboost vs VW 1.0tsi...

Featured Replies

Which is the better engine???

Swmbo is due a replacement, as the citigo is going to be 2 small now with car seats in the back, and stroller etc in the boot.

I cant convince her to go hybrid/EV as she read something about unethical lithium mining (chld labour etc) so doesnt want to support that. Didnt notice the same thing occurs for phones and other stuff mind..

So, weve narrowed down the likely candidate pool on boot space etc to either:

Leon,Golf,A3,Scala as an outsider (too new doesnt want brand new..)

All of which are available as 1/1.2tsi.

More than enough for her driving.

Or

Focus - 1.0ecoboost.

Ive only driven an ecoboost as a hire car for a couple of days once, and no experience of the tsi..

So, which is the better engine?

Personally, im trying to lean toward the golf as the focus interior is abit meh - i hate the blue needles, feels cheap.

PSA 1.2 is generally reckoned to be the best small petrol turbo, I like the Renault one.

Fuel consumption of the Ford can be miles off the published figure, not sure about the VW.

Renault was usually getting low to mid 50s with the TCE 90.

Skoda Octy I can get mid 50s from the 1.4 TSI 150 hp with the 7 speed DSG in eco setting which is good for a large car as the mk 3 Octy even if it is lightweight.

Only getting 70% of the book mpg can get disheartening.  Mate at work got a 1.0 125 hp Focus, pretty car but brutal suspension and only getting mid 40s mpg.

I have driven the latest 1.0 ecoboost in an ST line Focus I had for the week. I have to say I was impressed. It was really quiet on the motorway, plenty of power, and averaged an indicated 54mpg over a week of motorway commutes totalling about 500 miles. 70mph and cruise on all the way.

I would have a Golf over a Focus any day of the week though but not driven any of the smaller petrol engines

This kinda my problem too.. i have no proper experience of either unit.

Ive only driven one mk4 golf 1.4petrol as a test drive before i bought my mk1 octy back in 2012...

All the focusez ive driven have been diesels, other than that one for 3days around glasgow, so never got to fully explore it...

Quite a few ST-Line 1.0ecoboosts popping up for sale, but also plenty 1.0/1.2tsi golfs...

Swmbo cant drive psa, she has a torn shoulder ligament that the gear change in peugeots really aggravates. She hasnt had a single pain in her shoulder since she got lexi- other than after test driving a 208 a few years back..
