Service interval

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Superb 2.0 TDI was serviced in October at around 19000 miles and is now showing oil service and inspection due in 1000 miles, with the odometer at 23300.

Given that's about 3 months and 4000 miles, that seems to be a very short interval especially given that the bulk of my driving is a motorway commute.

Any thoughts as to why it's so short?

Does not need much thought.

The technician or fitter that serviced it never reset correctly the Service Indicator.

You either want Variable / Flexible Servicing or Fixed Servicing set.

Not Oil Service and Inspection Services showing at different time and miles.

Have the Dealership reset correctly.

If they say no, you say reservice free and reset then.

Was it serviced by Škoda or an independent?

It looks like they failed to reset the service interval, take it back and get them to reset it correctly.

Hi @zappahey. Doesn't sound right at all. Do you know what service regime it is on? The two options are fixed (c10k miles) or variable (c18k miles for mine). Just a guess, but it might be that they didn't reset the service interval in October. This happens more often than you would think, from what I've read on here. Was the service done by Skoda or independently? Either way it would be worth giving them a call.

Edit - crossed with Gizmo and Root.

They leave the factory set to Variable Servicing and at the PDI might get reset.

The issue is 2 Service Setting.   OIl Service and Inspection Service.     That should not be left as is with Oil Service and an Inspection Service.

Technicians that do the Job Full Time, are supposedly trained know that should not be left as is. They have all the gear, they should have more than an idea.

As it appears to be both inspection and service, doesn't make sense to me

Even if technician forgot to reset, why is it flagging up at 23000 miles, as it should show earlier of mileage and time, and I have never heard of a car getting to 23000 miles before suggesting a service.

Could it have been serviced at about 5000 miles ?

The problem with the forgot to reset idea, is what else did they forget to do, was it simply parked at dealership for a few hours and got a wash.   Only satisfactory resolution is a free full service as you have no idea which parts got done

Could it have been messed up totally some time when the Oil Service was on Variable at the PDI, 2 years 19,000 mile ish.

and the Inspection Service on 12 months 9,400 miles. Then who knows what happened.

Regardless someone messed up sometime.

Thanks all, it was the Skoda dealer so I'll give them a shout tomorrow.

Don't let them simply reset the service interval, this will potentially leave you 3 months / 4,000 miles over the next interval.

They need to re-service the car at the same time as resetting the service indicator, at their expense.

Can you please list the cars service history?

  • Fixed or Variable

There are two service regimes:

1) Fixed = 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever is reached first.

2) Variable = up to 24 months or 20,000 miles, the car decides for itself based on readings from various sensors.

I doubt they will do that (even if they say they will).

They can just adjust the interval to whatever they want (I.e. to the mileage it should have set to come back on.)

The ability of dealers to set the mileage to which the service indicator comes on has been discussed across multiple forums for as long as I can remember, without a definitive conclusion.

Some say it can be done, others say it can't. Some say it can be done with OBDeleven, others say that the dealers software doesn't have the ability.

There have been far too many threads where this has happened (it is unfortunately too common), and the franchised main dealers are simply resetting the service light to clear the light but then therefore pushing the cars beyond the next required service interval.

It is simply fixed.

You tell the Dealer Principal that their staff member messed up and you are wasting your time coming in.

They can do a Free Service and the Master Tech can show the Employee how to correctly reset the Service Indicator and check all the other parts of the service were done as per worksheet.

They do really need to have customers trusting that their staff know their ar5e from their elbow.   The customer can then big up them. On Social media even.
