Spare wheel when towing - options?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I was wondering on options for a spare wheel for when I'm towing.  I don't have a spare wheel at the moment (bloody canton sub woofer is in the way, even for a space saver), but I was thinking that a space saver wasn't really going to cut it when I'm towing anyway, and a full size wheel would be much safer.

I've got the Kodiaq RS with 20 inch wheels - is there any option other than buying a spare 20 inch in the same style as I have at the moment?  That would seem to be an expensive approach!

Room to store the wheel isn't an issue as I'd only carry it when towing and I can strap it to the trailer (which already has its own spare bolted to it).

I'm less worried about using the gunk when I'm just driving as I can always get towed to the nearest garage if the tyre is beyond help.  That's going to be infinitely more tricky when I have a trailer with a Caterham strapped to it.

Trailer and Caterham is around 1000kg if that helps.

Thoughts?

Going to Garages or Tyre & Exhaust Centres in or out of hours / Festive Holiday times etc is no use if they do not have a suitable tyre in stock.

Best get a Spare that will allow you to continue your journey.

I believe the RS is fitted with self sealing tires. At least mine was, with Continentals. Changed later to Pirellis, but also with self sealing layer. Never had problem.

Just in case I also have this kit in my car, used to use quite often on my Superb:

Also using spare attached to trailer, when towing. Not 20" original, but 17" steely.

Can you use a 17' spare with other 20' tyres?  As long as its not a space saver, that could be a solution

A 17" wheel is not fitting with your front discs is it?

Maybe a 18" with appropriate size tyre will be fine for whichever corner.

17" will fit easily. The front disks are not bigger than the other Kodiaqs have, just the brake saddles are bigger with 4 pistons.

Never tried the 17" yet to fit. But it will, local dealer confirmed.

I have two sets of 18" alloys for winter tires (studded and european version non studded) and there is about 3 - 4 cm gap between the rim and the brake support.

It is fine to tow with the approved factory fitted spare wheel, just obey the speed restrictions printed on the face of the spare wheel, and use some common sense.

If you specify both Canton and the spare wheel as a factory order the Canton subwoofer fits inside the spare wheel, so they will both fit out of the way under the boot floor.

I couldn't be chewed dragging a full size spare or 20" alloy around with me in the boot or on the trailer...

Might have a fiddle around with the Canton sub to see if I can make room for the space saver...

There is one problem. You cannot spec the spare wheel for RS. I tried to get one, but it was just not possible. Understood why only when the car arrived. That`s because of the battery located almost in the middle of the trunk.

I’d just order a 18” rim from ebay with the appropriate tyre size.

I doubt you could fit a spare wheel in the boot, definitely not without mucking around with your battery.

So can I mix and match 20 inch rims with an 18 inch?  Assume I would need to ensure the profile of the tyre is greater to try and match the overall size of wheel and rim?

(Obviously just as a temporary measure to get home)
