Is yours getting slacker as it's getting older?

Featured Replies

Ha, now I've got your attention.

For all Karoq owners out there with the retractable load cover/wind break/partition cover, I was wondering if you have noticed if the cover retracts fully if it's unclipped from the tailgate? My Karoq is coming up to two years old now and I've recently noticed that the last 4 to 6 inches of the cover just hangs there. Following on from Silver's post regarding the similar situation with the Kodiaq load cover I tried to lubricate the mechanism at either end of the load cover body, but it hasn't made any difference. I think the Karoq load cover is slightly different in that the cover lifts upwards as the tailgate rises, so doesn't need to extend or retract much. It is only when you need to remove it completely or retract it completely that the problem arises - also the material is thinner and flimsier if it makes any difference.

Has anyone successfully managed to get a new one under warranty, or managed to retention the spring mechanism?  Skoda - Simply Slack

I suspect that the failing is in the nature of the beast....those springs in retractable roller blinds all grow tired eventually......in a similar vain, we've got a set of 10 Ikea ones in the conservatory (3 years old now and not particularly cheap) and none of the buggers now go fully back into their cassettes......I'll check on our 1 year old Karoq and certainly keep a watchful eye until the warranty expires.

I bought a 5 month old Karoq in july 18 and had the cover replaced within a month under warranty and now the new one is getting slack.

It's in for service this month I will mention it to them.

Thanks Gomezz, it might well be worth a telephone call to my dealers, or even Skoda Customer Services. 👍

Now you come to mention it, I  noticed today mine is getting slack also!

I have 3 inches that refuses to fully retract.

(Pause while I check im on the right website!! 😂)

My karoq is 1year 9months old. Interesting that this is now a "feature" like the stiff fuel flap thingy.

Mine is doing the same. Similar age to OldKaroq's above. Warranty time I think.

So, had my car in to the dealers this week to let them have a look at the load cover issue. Great news, they are replacing it under warranty. I had a look at the load cover in their showroom Karoq and it was like a mouse trap in comparison. I had to book the car in as a proper job rather than just having someone just coming outside to have a look, so they also said they would do a free look/see check of the car, so I mentioned the issue of MOLL batteries as was one of the threads on here. Great news again, they replaced the battery with a Varta battery, again under warranty, even though it hadn't given me any problems so far.

Obviously they would like to find something to drum up work but I did think they were taking the preverbal when they said all the wiper blades were streaking on the glass (new last week)! Other than that there was the usual Air Con Service due time and scored discs.

So the solution is Varta for the battery and Viagra for the load cover?

Yeah pretty much. Never had any problems getting it started over the past two years but didn't want to take any chances, and hopefully when I get the other job done next week that bit should be quite taught....

Yep - went out this morning to remove the load cover from my Karoq and found that it wouldn't retract the last 4 inches. I guess I hadn't noted this before as much of the cover's time is spent out of the car - unusually, this time, it had spent a couple of weeks in the car with the cover fully extended. It's hardly an emergency, so it's one to store up for my next visit to the dealer.

My car is Sept 2018.

2yrs and 27k miles, no problems at all and to be honest, it's the least rattley, least creaky car I have ever had. Really pleased as these things annoy me (a lot)

After posting this just over a year ago, I did very little mileage in the car (covid etc) and, of that, the load cover was removed for most of the time. Stupidly, I forgot to mention the matter at the car's service last September. A couple of weeks ago, I took another look and, if anything, the cover was even saggier. After making an appointment, the dealer was able to take a look at it this morning while I waited - and replaced the cover foc under warranty - the new cover retracts fully, as it should.

While at the dealers, I took the opportunity to have the satnav card updated; I returned this afternoon to collect that - all very helpful, I thought. [Vindis, Bury St Edmunds]

I had my load cover replaced for the same problem at around a year old, started to get slow again a year later!

Squirted some GT85 into the ends and that fixed it.

Mine's booked in tomorrow to look at this.

I think its telling that all the new cars I've looked at recently have hard covers.

Are they the ones without Varioflex rear seats?

A pal who PX'd his Karok said his was starting to fail to retract fully at around 30 months old.  He advised me to leave it retracted for a while now and again, avoids stretching the elastic or springs or whatever.

OldKarok mentioned a few posts back the "stiff fuel cap thingy".  Is that where the flap is reluctant to pop open ?  I've searched the forum, does anyone else have this issue?

How old was it?

December 2018 (MY19). 11,000 miles.

Cheers Tom.  Still well inside warranty period, and presumably little used, in view of your low mileage.  Something for me to watch for between now and September next year (warranty expires then).

I think it's all to do with the cover being fixed to the boot lid and being pulled out near its limit every time the boot is opened.

I'm not attaching the cover to the boot lid now, just leaving it retracted till its needed.

That's fair enough and, as far as possible, I'll try to operate like that as well in future. However, for much of the time, my load cover had been out of the car altogether - and still it 'went saggy', so I suspect there was some inherent weakness in the design/manufacture.
