Misbehaving Tailgate

Featured Replies

Has anyone else experienced this problem???

My 2012 Superb Estate has very recently developed a issue with the tailgate. I have an electric tailgate which works as it should when opening and closing. However it will now unlatch itself virtually as soon as I pull away. It will do this even if I lock the tailgate before pulling away. It will also unlatch on occasion when I close a door and I can also get it to do so if I tap the tailgate with a closed fist near the rear Skoda badge.
Having said all of this if I close the tailgate and then try to lift it, it won’t budge at all.

Also when it does unlatch it doesn’t register as an open door on the multi-function display.

To me it seems to be a mechanical issue with the latch just not travelling far enough and hence popping off either through vibration when moving or internal cabin pressure when closing a door.

There doesn’t appear to be anything that is preventing the tailgate from completing its full travel I.e. poorly fitting rear seal or other obstruction. I have also tried my best to lubricate the mechanism through using a light spray grease with a nozzle but to no avail.

I’m not sure if there is any adjustment on the tailgate latching plate which is secure. And if so, I can’t understand why or how anything could have become misaligned or have moved.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Just an update on this issue.  I seem to have located the source of the problem.

Having investigated the lock latch which sits in the tailgate all appeared to working correctly so I turned my attention to the tailgate lock mechanism that sits in the sill of the boot.  As has been described in other posts when the tailgate closes this emits a whirring noise.  Having removed the rear trim from the boot sill and having climbed into the boot I was able to observe how the mechanism works.

Once the "boot close" button is pressed the 2 struts bring the tailgate down where the lock latches onto the post that is part of the tailgate lock mechanism (see image RED ARROW).  It is then that the whirring noise is heard and the mechanism draws the tailgate post downwards to what should be its closed position.  (See image GREEN ARROW shows part of mechanism which is activated by the motor)  For approximately 5 seconds it is ok but then the mechanism reverses its action and the tailgate post is returned to its original position. I have tried a thorough degreasing and cleaning followed with a light lubrication.  Having done so the mechanical side of the mechanism is moving freely.

Hence my conclusion is that the tailgate lock mechanism is faulty in that it doesn't hold its closed position.  I'm wondering if there is a small limit switch within it that tells the mechanism when it has reached its full travel.  If this isn't made the motor reverses and the mechanism returned to its starting position.  This is just a theory that I have and would love to hear if anyone else has any experience regarding the testing of the part (Part No. shown image)

Any feedback would be gratefully received.
