Winter Tyres

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting winter rims and tyres. When I search for suitable wheels all I am offered for my car are 16". My current wheels are 17" with 215/55R17 tyres with space saver spare. I would like to be able to use the spare with the winter tyres so I'm assuming I need to get 17" winter wheels and tyres? I'm thinking about just getting steel rims and getting winter tyres fitted to them, but what size do I need?

There are a number of authorised wheel / tyre sizes.

Depends on the engine size (sometimes smallest size won’t fit over bigger brakes on more powerful versions)

Try using this configurator, should help, ideally want wheels that fit directly without adapters (simply select Skoda and model and engine size in drop downs).  Can select more and find wheels and tyres (you can shop around once you have selected) but this German site is good for finding valid combinations

If you have a space saver spare it is only for temporary use so will be marginally different size anyway.

Plenty Winters in 215/55 R 17 on http://camskill.co.uk

Or All Seasons.

If nobody has any offered for sale in the Briskoda Classified ads maybe put up a Wanted ad.

Some are already talking about taking off their winters just because no winter down south yet.

Why not get Michelin CrossClimates on your wheels in 215/55 R 17, or do you want more Winter / Snow bias tyres?

If no Package is available with Steel Rims & Tyres. then just get 17" Steels and tyres separate.

@Carlston might be along with all the links.

I'm thinking about the Michelin Alpin for the snowy roads up north. So what size of steel rims would I need to order?

Temperatures in parts of Scotland to hit 16C next Tuesday so snow highly unlikely. Got to love Global Warming in winter.B)

Michelin Alpin are very good, but then so are any All Season tyres because you still only drive on the roads up North when they are open and all the other vehicles are getting about on Summer tyres.

Snowgates closed and nobody is going through the A9, Glenshee or the Lecht or up to the Cairngorm carparks.

Michelin Alpin 6 are about 50% more expensive in the 215/55R17 size compared to the 215/60R16 size.

Check what diameter front discs you have.

288mm front discs accept 15" rims.

312mm front discs accept 16" rims.

340mm front discs accept 17" rims.

I'd suggest the Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen 2s. I had them on my Octavia. Brilliant driving for 40 miles on snow coming down from Torridon to Glasgow a couple of years ago.

I was the only car moving out my estate during the Beast from the East. On a slight uphill they kept the car going through unplowed, uncompacted snow higher than the engine undertray.  They were better with fwd than my work Octavia Scout was with 4wd on summer tyres driven back to back on snow.

£110 mail order or £125 fitted.

https://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/goodyear/vector-4seasons-gen-2/215/55/R215/V/94/m?tyre=35076515

As a bonus they were far quiter than the OE Bridgestones tyres I took of the car. Went from tyre noiise being the predominant noice at most speeds to tyre noise being somewhere in the background. This removed the biggest flaw with that car - excessive noise.
