Software updates

Featured Replies

Just a quick question: when you get a service, are you supposed to get software updates too? Only I noticed via OBDeleven that my engine was on software version 2181 yet OBDeleven tells me 5813 is available. One assumes that the updated software provides bug fixes (apart from the whole dieselgate thing)?

thanks

Even when I told Sparshatts Skoda that there was a software update available (with full details including the new software version) that totally denied that the update existed

So I guess it depends on the dealer and technician...

I guess what they mean is they will provide "mandatory" software updates free for you at service.

However, most software updates are "optional" and will only be offered under warrenty "if" you can demostrate that the problem you have is directly solved by the available update.

Out of warrenty & any "optional" updates will cost you...

This is clever marketting to make you think you are getting lots of free updates (because the google generation love to have updates, further more inforced by the latest OTA style updates from Tesla) when in reality you would be lucky to get one at all from VAG.

I just phoned Skoda Customer Services who said my car was up to date with any "campaigns" and that dealers would only update software if a campaign required it. So who knows what these updates do, but I'll not find out it seems...

In the UK at Main Dealer Servicing 'Software Updates & Enhancements' are something you sign that you accept as they are applied when the car is checked on the Diagnostics.

If you did not want any, maybe because your ECU has a remap etc, or it is the Emissions Fix or similar which is optional you can opt out.

The Manufacturers Warranty T&C's say that not having Recall Actions and Software Updates carried out can void the Warranty.

The Manufacturers can not have it all ways.  If compulsory to have Software Updates then they have to be held responsible if there are adverse affects.

Always check when getting your car serviced and do not just sign when handing in the keys that they can do Software Updates if they can not explain what and why.

Is there a TPI, is there a Recall or Recall Action, a Service Campaign or a Voluntary Recall.

Below is the 2019 Fixed Price Servicing page. Now changed in 2020.

'Vehicle & software enhancements from Skoda's database.'

"Signing" for software updates is only since the dieselgate scandal as far as I'm aware because so many people complained about EGR failures after the update & probably only apply to the engine ECU I'd imagine???

Recall, Recall Action or Service Campaign would be "mandatory" updates.

Small bugfixes for the ecu, radio, maxidot, abs, etc etc which are not forced legally (due to emissions for example) & wont cause a failure in  < 3 years or 60k miles (i.e. wont cost VAG money) will be classed as "optional" and most users are unlikely to get them.

When I bought my car in 2013, the same "software enhancements" was detailed in the service list.

However, I've not had any updates & had to ask several times before the dealer accepted to update the Columbus firmware (because my issue was not in their issues database) with a software update as a fix.

People have driven cars in for a Service, running good and picked them up and driven onto the road to find the car goes like a bag of nails.

Software update carried out, maybe an Engine Update or a DSG one and the Service Desk staff said nothing.

Some cheeky barstewards even applied the Emissions Fix without permission.

Long before that Dealership Techs had applied relevant Software Updates, owner unaware.

We are talking the UK.  Somehow staff think what they do to your property is their business. Need to know, loose lips cost lives.

You do not need to know, you are a Mushroom, to be kept in the dark and shovelled sh!t.

DATA PROTECTION, not your business.

So you never trust them.

'They call people', say THERE IS A RECALL. there is no Recall, there is a Servicing Campaign quite often, and they are being paid to do them.

http://skoda-auto.com/services/recall-actions

This VIN checker is pretty useless.

Signing for the Emissions Fix is only since the emissions fix.

You always hand in your keys when the car goes to the Dealers, be that Servicing, Warranty etc,

there is a Worksheet.  You sign you accept what it says on there. READ IT.

The person should come out, check the car, check the wheels, check the body.   But you already signed.

So you sign in the car. Be sure what it says, because if you want them to call you when the Tech finds there is a TPI or Software Update or Enhancement available

be sure that they do know to.

I managed to get my dealer to a a minor software update on the infotainment system during warranty by giving them a list of minor issues that I'd had with it. They had no idea whether it would fix them, but it seems to have been better since.

There are currently 6 software updates for my car, I asked Garlands to install them in the vain hope that it may cure some of the ill's plaguing my car, but they won't do it unless authorised by SUK.

I expect a phone call from them tomorrow regarding the ongoing issues with the car, I will be pressing for the software updates to be applied, to see if they resolve the issues. Otherwise we will be having a discussion about returning the car.

This was basically the same for me.

I'd demostrated the behaviour to the technicians, they went away & searched through the "TSB" database for the infotainment & said that there was nothing in the change logs which would fix my issues.

As they understood the issues were very annoying (music always starts from the first track & nav guidance is stopped when returning to the car) they offered to "try" the latest software update.

Unfortunately it didnt fix either….. 😞
