Rear camber adjustment on estate

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

So I've been bitten by the infamous tyre wear issue on the mk2. My rear tyres are fairly badly 'stepped' on the inner edges. Has anyone found a cure to this issue? From looking into to it, there seems to be little that can be done as the rear wheels are negatively cambered from factory.

A problem across a lot of VAG cars it seems

Pretty sure you can reduce the rear camber to help reduce the problem :)

Service manual says you are correct!

With the Superb II independent suspension, if the back (people and/or luggage) becomes heavily loaded it can affect camber.  I remember one journey through France with four adults on board  - the two in the rear were 6ft 5" and 6ft 7"  - and a huge amount of stuff in the boot. That scrubbed a fair bit off the inside of the rear tyres over about 2500 miles. Saying that I always get over 35k miles out of a set of tyres (poverty spec 250/55/16). When two up (in the front) and a bit of luggage tyre wear is light.

However it's worth getting a full 4 wheel alignment done though with new tyres

As bigjohn says, full 4 wheel alignment is the key.  Go for a place with Hunter 3D or similar equipment.

I had the same problem, extreme inner edge of the rears worn through to the canvas, hard to spot without being right under the car ( I do keep an eye on my tyres!)....

Anyway, took it to a local place and they tweaked everything up, I am still running the 'new' tyres I had at the time of adjustment and they are wearing well.

Cost was around £80, approx 2 - 3 hours.

See here...

I am also running tyre pressures a bit higher than the loading recommendation and I do think this is making a big difference with wear and handling.

Depending on age/condition of the suspension components the level of adjustment may be restricted as the adjustment bolts start to corrode etc.  Could be additional labour freeing off siezed bolts to be factored into the cost.

Cheers Dave
