Proper OE lid for centre console storage cubby hole

Featured Replies

This was for me a really worthwhile upgrade, coming from Octavia Elegances (MK1 & 2) that had loads of storage lockers my Yeti was a bit lacking maybe because its a poverty spec, whilst the open storage cubby in front of the gearlever is a decent size I really did not like the fact that it was open without a cover, it looks naff, fills up with dust & detritus and I dont want the brin (French slang) that I store in there (trade cards etc) to be on view.

The Octavia had an ashtray with a flush fitting hinged & damped cover in the same place, inside if you removed the inner ashtray it was a usefull storage space, I removed it and compared it to the bin from the Yeti and could see that the outer dimensions and curvature looked identical but the innards were larger. I decided to buy an Octavia one from a breakers (£10 delivered) and try and modify it to fit.

I had read on this forum that it would foul against the heater ducts but I found that if you chop enough redundant material away it can be persuaded to fit but unfortunately there is not enough clearance for the lid to swing open. - Back to the drawing board 🙁

Plan B!

Cut the lid off and discard the rest, grind away the remaining material from the hinges and some plastic tabs and you will find that the lid is in fact double skinned, throw away the inner skin and grind away the remaining projections and you have a lid that fits perfectly but 3 problems to solve.

How to hinge it so it opens but you cannot see the hinges or their fixings.

How to make it remain up in the open position allowing one hand to remain on the steering wheel.

How to make the lid latch in the lower position so that it does not rattle over bumps.

As ever the simplest solutions are the best and the most elegant.

For the hinges I used 2 of the smallest black tyraps that I had, drilled holes in the top corners of the lid and cubby flange and strapped them together tightly with the tywraps, they are not visible unless you put your head on the floor and the tension created in the tywraps when the lid is opened holds it in the fully open position.

For the latch at the bottom I did not want anything to encroach into the cubby space (it would catch on the hand) or to see any fixings on the outside, I used 2 strips of black velcro on the lower flange of the cubby and the back of the lid and it works perfectly.

I left a stiffening rib on the rear of the door so its sits slightly proud but parallel and a perfect fit but leave just enough clearance to lift the lid with a fingertip.

I am really stoked with the result, cant do photos (Oh yes I can 🤣) but it looks identical to the OE ashtray/storage cubby cover on the Octavia.

Do higher spec Yetis have a proper storage box with a lid or is there a "smokers pack" option?

Thank you for your kind comments.

Perhaps the photo's taken in the dark by flash and from an angle that a driver or passenger would never be in dont do it justice.

Do you think the OE centre consoles on Skoda Octavias, Superbs etc look naff as well or is that scorn just reserved for my efforts?

Chacun a son gout.

I will take a daylight photograph from the drivers eyeline.
