Swap from 1.2 3 cylinder to 1.4 4 cylinder

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!! ☺️ So I recently bought my first car and it's a Fabia 6y 1.2 6v 54hp awy engine. I'm liking the car a lot and for it being my first car and something i've had to work to buy, it has grown a big sentimental value on me. But as the time goes by, I'm starting to feel the lack of power, especially on the highway. And that made me wonder what is the viability of making a swap to the 1.4 16v 100hp bbz engine that also came in the fabia 6y, as I don't know if it's an easy swap "direct swap", if it would be necessary to change the gearbox etc and an estimate price to do it...

Well.. those are my doubts and sorry if I said something stupid 😅

Thank you for the time and attention btw!!

There's an old saying that goes "don't build what you can buy"; and in this case it is fully justified.

Yeah, you would have to change the gearbox and a whole host of other stuff. Would be far from easy.

100% True!! I agree that it would be the best way.. but in Portugal the prices are much higher and the prices online for a bbz engined car in similar shape as mine is around €4000 and I don't think I could sell mine for more than €2000

So, probably besides the engine it would be necessary to change the gearbox and ECU? Would it reuse the other parts?? In that case it would cost €1200+ just for the engine, gearbox and ECU 😢

Btw thank you all for your replies and for the time spent with me ☺️

You are welcome :)

You're being unrealistic, this is your first car,  the project is too big and too costly and it's not worth doing.

Unless you already have all the tools, the skills and the facilities together with a suitable donor vehicle and a spare car to drive while yours is off the road for a few weeks then knock yourself out.

But the fact that you're here asking these questions tells me you should just forget the idea and start saving up.

Some random things off the top of my head that I think will be different are the clutch, exhaust, air filter, cooling hoses, possibly driveshafts, engine mounts, some wiring, to name but a few.

Instrument cluster too.  Which affects immobiliser and keys etc.

Huge job.

For all the job involved you could swap a VR6 engine as well. Service your car, sort the handling out. Engine swaps? Don't bother.
