Noisy fuel pump

Featured Replies

Started looking through previous posts for this problem but gave up.

I bought my Octavia Elegance TDI CR (2013) 3 yrs ago with this fault.

When I turn on the engine I can hear a whirring sound, it's not very loud and isn't noticeable whilst driving, it doesn't get any louder.

When the engine is turned off, the whirring sound carries on for approx 3/5 seconds then shuts off. Is it the fuel pump or something else? My local garage mentioned it might be air!

My car is due an interim service at Skoda (the same price quoted as my local garage £179) I am considering having the fault finally rectified but they are saying a new fuel pump from the main dealers is in the region of £220 for the part only.

I tried to identify which pump I needed from on-line so I could consider buying there but I couldn't trust myself to get the right one.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

If its the fuel pump in the tank you can lift up the back seat and listen to it more closely if you think its that, that is making the noise.

It might just be the return fuel sender. This sends fuel from the pipeline back to the tank. Many vehicles use this set-up. Then you will get an early pumping of fuel too, when starting so as to have fuel back up into the injectors, etc to start properly.

You might just be noticing something that is meant to happen and even if it IS starting to wear out, three years of the same noise can't be a significant issue. It will ever keep going or pack up when its good and ready!

If you are in one of the car breakdown clubs, (AA, RAC, Greenflag, etc) , let them deal with it when it eventually goes but when servicing, ask the techie if he/she thinks its a normal sound. They may say its slowly dying or say its perfectly normal.

Best not to ask the desk though, as they will then get the techie to look into it, charging you for the pleasure. Try asking as they are doing the job or after they complete, etc.

It's definitely noisier when I put my ear to the back seat, so it is the pump in the tank.

Is it an easy fix to change the pump?

It's just on of those things that finally gets to you. I agree it could stay like this while I have the car, but what if it packs in when I could well do without.

I have a noisy fuel pump in my 2019 TSI. At idle, or under stop start it will make the priming noise you get when you first start the car. In my case it never stops, it will do it until the ignition is turned off. You can feel it through the rear seat, you can also feel it through various fixtures in the cabin. One dealer said it was normal, its not.

The noise you have explained sounds like what both of my VRS's have done, whereby a buzz is heard for a few seconds after the ignition is turned off. Ideally hearing another car under the same circumstance would be helpful.

In my case the local dealer went bust, the next dealer is useless and a patronising liar so Im left having to travel to Scotland in a few weeks for a decent disgnosis.

If the pump is £220 and theres an hour labour on top I will be tempted to have it done and persue it through small claims using an independant inspection of the old pump, which I will no doubt have to buy back off them.

My 2017 Vrs245 only made the fuel pump priming noise when you unlocked it. Otherwise it was silent which is what I would call normal.

Hi,

It looks (sounds) like the damaged fuel pump. I had experienced the same issue in my 2015 2.0TDI CFKC engine Octy. I bought it as a used car and probably the previous user ran out of fuel someday. It caused that the pump was running w/out lubrication for a while as well as drawn dirt (residuals) from the bottom of the fuel tank. And this resulted in pump noisy working, so I had to replace it. I bought a used pump with sellers guaranty for assembly time being. As far as I remember the pump OEM no. was 5Q0919050P.

Hi,

My problem solved.

Managed to get a second hand pump (after two false deliveries) with a 3 month guarantee.

The biggest problem was getting the back seat out, but once I figured the ISO seat fixing removal it was a doddle.

Pump replaced and is very quiet, thank you for all your posts.

Hi folks,

I have the same problem with my 2015 Octavia Scout 4x4 2.0 TDI.

It's exactly as you described, whirring noise from under back seat when engine switches on, sounds carries on for a few seconds after switching engine off.

It isn't noticeable when driving but it's driving me mad because I know it's not right.

Seems the pump for this car is harder to get hold of and I can't find any second hand units at the moment.

I've also had a garage suggest it might be the control unit for the pump that's the issue but I'm not convinced.

Any suggestions on suppliers for the pump? I think it's model number 5Q0919088AM but i'll need to lift the back seat to double check that.

Well after a month I finally have a new second hand fuel pump in and it's working perfectly. Nice and silent. It's so nice to not hear that horrible whining when I start the car.

The first one I ordered got lost in the post, brokers refused to refund me so I had to get my bank involved for a refund. (Specialist Dismantlers, Oldham) please never use them. This company had some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Lies and being fobbed off at every turn.

The second one I ordered from a different brokers arrived with a broken outer case, so my mechanic and I had to disassemble the old unit and use the outer case from it on the new pump. (UKVechicleDismantlers - through eBay) Although the outer case was broken the customer service and packaging was very good.

Hopefully this will help anyone else with a similar problem.

Thanks for all the info there, my fuel pump started making a knocking sound in the tank, I replaced it with a spurious brand new one (volt) through Car Spares Dudley, this worked very well for 4 weeks then the same thing happened again, they replaced it under warranty for a Hella branded one, this didn't work properly either, I then purchased a 2nd hand genuine VAG pump which is quieter when priming but still not running.

After some advice yesterday I'm about to order a J538 fuel pump control module which I hope will solve the issue

Update on the pump issue, having replaced the fuel pump control unit with a genuine 2nd hand one off Ebay £54, it primed the fuel through with ease & fired up straight away.

Previous fault codes included P0087, P3043, P304300, P3073, P308D,

After replacing no fault codes were found.

I've attached some photos incase it helps someone else.

If anyone needs a replacement fuel pump (5Q0919050 P) I have a new Hella branded one available as it was not the problem but can't be returned as it was fitted.

Thanks for the advice
