Wireless Android Auto

Featured Replies

Have just taken ownership of my Kamiq and like it a lot

However I have been trying to get wireless AA to work with no success ( USB connected is fine)

went online to chat with the experts at Skoda

One told me there will be an update in the coming weeks

The other told me it is not available in most Countries but did not know which Countries it is available...

If you look online everywhere including the Skoda site - it states that Kamiq does have AA wirelessly

I pointed this out to the expert online and he told me that this was a generic site for all Countries

Anyone have any idea what is REALLY going on?

BTW  I have the Bolero radio that is connected to the internet

THIS FROM THEIR SITE

Both the SCALA and the KAMIQ now enable drivers to connect a smartphone to their car using wireless technology. They are the first models from the ŠKODA family to offer the new Wireless SmartLink technology, which makes for even more convenient use of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In conjunction with the inductive charging feature of the optional Phone Box and the cordless connection to the vehicle aerial, this even enables completely wireless in-car smartphone use.

Up until now, ŠKODA drivers had to connect their mobile phones to their vehicles via a USB cable in order to be able to use the brand’s SmartLink technology. Selected smartphone apps then display on the infotainment system’s screen and can be controlled while driving. However, the optional Wireless SmartLink technology for the compact SCALA and the new KAMIQ city SUV is now making smartphone integration and use even easier and more convenient.

The first time a smartphone is used, drivers have to establish a connection to the infotainment system via Bluetooth. Once this has been done, the phone will always connect automatically via Wireless SmartLink as soon as the driver enters the car, provided the Bluetooth function is activated. The smartphone is paired via Bluetooth; the data for mirroring is transmitted over Wi-Fi. If the smartphone is placed in the optional Phone Box upon entering the vehicle, it connects to the infotainment system as well as to the vehicle’s outside aerial to ensure optimal reception and is inductively charged at the same time.

...but it doesn't work and no time scale when it will. Notice it does not mention that it is a work in progress 🤨

  • 3 weeks later...

Does anyone know if the problem of wireless android auto is software related, hardware or licence? The sales staff at my local dealership don't seem to know anything. I would like to trade in my yeti but won't until I know what I'm buying...I guess my point is if a buy the kamiq now will wireless android work on it in the future?

  • Author

My guess is software related. There is already a sim card in the unit so it just needs wifi capability to be activated.

They are stating that its coming soon so can only be a software update. Apparently, some EU Countries already have it, so maybe they are rolling it out slowly.]

Asked at the dealerhere in Spain and they are just as confused as the rest of us.......

many thanks

Who's site? Skoda Auto or Skoda UK? Do you have a link?

As mentioned by Kenny R, Skoda can put whatever they want in their online and hard copy content, if they then cover themselves with clauses stating that it isn't yet available in all markets.

Might be mistaken.?    I  am currently driving a 2017 Octavia  and my android smart phone is wirelessly paired.

You mean you're using Bluetooth to pair your phone to the car to make phone calls?

Yes and receive.  Is that not what you are talking about?

Yes using Bluetooth to call an receive via wireless  pairing in 2017 Octavia

This thread is relating to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

This is where you can control certain features on your phone from the infotainment screen using the cars controls. It also mirrors what is on your phone's screen to the screen of the infotainment system. Mainly used for satellite navigation apps primarily, such as Google Maps and Waze...

https://www.android.com/auto/

Until recently this was only possible via a wired connection into the car's USB slot.

Skoda are now offering this feature, but without the wire, called Wireless SmartLink.

Bluetooth for phone connectivity in terms of making and receiving calls and text messages has been in cars in various forms since 1999.

OK, I see now, but what else is it that is now only on latest models.?

Sorry I think I get it now, way too much technology for me.

I've recently taken delivery of my Kamiq SE and appear to be having similar issues with 'Wireless Smartlink' as described in the online adverts. I downloaded the relevant pages from the online Kamiq owners handbook (pages 84 - 87) and 'Wi-Fi' is mentioned many times in this section on the Bolero infotainment unit. I'm relative proficient at navigating through Skoda infotainment systems, but I can find no reference to 'Wi-Fi' on the Bolero unit despite following instructions from different sections on pages 84-87. However connection using USB does work.

So I wonder if the 'Wi-Fi' capabilty is not available on Kamiqs produced for the UK market or is it an 'option'?

Thanks for that.

How do you switch the WiFi on in your Kamiq? So far I have been unable to locate any mention of it on my Bolero unit.

Could you also tell more about eSIM.

my android phone connects wirelessly to my Octavia, I wonder if that will be the same in the kamiq s.

I am very grateful for all the help and advice provided.

Unfortunately as I am still unable to find any reference to WiFi on my Bolero unit, but I have entered detaiIs of the WLAN in my mobile phone -  unable to connect being out of range was the indication on my phone..

I notice that skoda1982 has the Kamiq SEL model which will no doubt have the Amundsen unit fitted -  I wonder if the enhanced capabilities of this unit are significant in terms of getting WiFi.

I have taken note of the guidance provided, but sadly without success.

I have now contacted my dealer regarding this matter by email ( they are not yet open) and the same to Skoda (UK). I await their responses with interest.

Well as you were.

I only wrote to Skoda(UK) yesterday but I have just had lengthy, informative and helpful phone call from Phil from Skoda (UK). He called me rather than respond in an email, so we could discuss the issue with my Kamiq.

As was anticipated, the Bolero unit is not as capable as the Amundsen, but the reason I cannot connect my phone to the WiFi is that Android Auto is currently only wireless on a fairly limited number of high-end relatively new Android phones. This is not the case with Apple Phones and Apple Car Play which is apparently routinely wireless enabled. The 2 Android phones I have available are relatively new, but would be described as 'budget' examples, so are not enabled for wireless Android Auto.

I am now investigating to see if a work-around is available, but in the meantime I will use a USB connection with my phone for Android Auto.

I am very grateful for the swift response from Skoda(UK) and from Phil in particular.

Stay safe.
