Swollen Wheel Nuts.....

Featured Replies

I got copied on an email from my boss today, it doesnt affect me as i dont have a bik fleet vehicle, however i thought it very unusal -

Suggest you chexk your brace fits on the wheel nuts.

Had a puncture this morning and couldn't change it as apparently over time water gets inside the chrome cover so they rust and swell.

(Tyre fitters) in (local town) say its a common problem.

(Fleet manager) as discussed.

His vehicle, along with most of the bik fleet is a 2016 ford focus diesel. The only thing differwnt is when people are due a change so the years may be a bit different, but his due replacement this year as its every 4 years.

Is swelling of wheel nuts actually common, is it a ford "feature" or is the tyre company kinda taking the ****?

Ive never heard of it....

Swollen nuts sounds painful. Will try and keep mine dry. Thanks shy.

Hi Mac, I had the same problem on an Isuzu Trooper - the steel nuts had a pressed-on SS cover sleeve, which delaminated and made the nuts a real pig to remove!

Unfortunately this is a ford thing although it's not just that the nuts swell the chrome caps deform as well, the first thing I did when I got my focus st home was replace the original nuts with chrome covers with some decent solid capless nuts.

The standard ford nuts are open ended and 18mm, the chrome cap they bodge over takes them upto 19mm. Over time and and poor tool usage they start to twist and and deform, so the 19mm wheel brace no longer fits over them but with the caps removed its too big for the 18mm nuts.

Here is new new replacement next to the original nut - the cap.

Interesting... i had never eard of any of that happening!

As above, I'd imagine that someone's mis-identified a cover as being the nut.

The cover over the nut is not removable by design and is meant to stay on the nut. If you remove it then the nut is under size.

Not really an issue on this forum as i've never seen them on any VAG car
