Chip damage on hood of MY19 Kodiaq

Featured Replies

I found a chip damage on the hood of my Kodiaq. Asked a few shops and they don't want to do smart repair, so I got offers on re-painting the entire hood, which will be expensive. I don't know when it happened, but I'm suspecting a trip on the highway in December. Ironically a trip to pick up the car after having one of the doors re-painted.

Can you tell from the photos (not the best ones) if this is a damage that will get worse and start to rust? It's very small and I could possibly live with it and do the entire hood at a later time if more damage occurs, maybe add some drops of bottle paint, but I really don't want rust to start spreading down there. If that's a risk, I might just order the re-painting and close my eyes when paying.

Especially the largest hole looks a bit deep.

A touch up kit would be far cheaper and would cover up the majority of the damage. Skoda should sell them.

One of them looks to be down to bare metal.

I've touched up lots of minor/major chips over the last 10 years. If its bare metal, I stick a little kurust on to make sure, tiny bit of etch primer (sprayed into the cap, applied with a small brush) then cover with a layer or two of top coat and laquer. It won't be a perfect finish and may be overkill, but it should stop any rust. Stone chips happen all the time, unless you're going to protect the vehicle paying for a respray of the bonnet isn't really worth it imho as 6 months down the line it may just happen again.

Example...

As WW and CC, I'd use a touch up on those.

I found using a cocktail stick a better way to introduce not too much paint into the holes, with similar results to CC.  Not perfect, but certainly acceptable.  They're going to happen, unfortunately - c'est la vie.

Thanks for the advice! I'll take a look around for suitable tools for the job here in Norway.

It's part of the game and it certainly will happen again, so I was hoping I could do some minor repair to seal it and at least make it look a bit better.

Use that cocktail stick to drop some Rust Inhibitor in the chips first.  Leave at least a day.

If there is metal it will do the job and if still primer no harm done and at least the chip is a little more filled.

When using the paint or paint and lacquer. If a 2 part set,   Just a little, then later a little more and again if needed.  don't try to fill a chip all in one.

If paint and lacquer, maybe just enough paint, more lacquer.

& dont make the damage more obvious by going bigger than the chip.  If the paint you put down sits proud it is easy enough to cut that back down and then polish.

Shake shake and shake again the Touch Up, and then shake and shake, you can never shake it enough.

Thanks.

Should the hood have a certain temperature before doing anything? It's winter and the car is parked outside with temperatures around -5-5°C

Protip: Mix base and clear coat, fill the chip enough to get a little «mountain top». Wetsand it down and polish it up - voila, its gone.
