Tyres Mot Question

Featured Replies

Hey all, if ive got 205/55r16 tyres on my mk1 estate (on vrs wheels) will this cause an issue for MOT? current tyres 205/45r16 are a defo fail and want 55s for the extra durability and a tiny lift.

Have you checked carefully to make sure they don't rub? What specification are the rims? According to the Skoda online parts catalogue, they are 6.5Jx16 ET37

Alloy rim number 11 in the diagram.

Yeah so the car has ran them a while ago while my friend owned the car, it did somewhat rub a little bit on full lock, is that considered a fail? ive got the original 14s but the tread on them is pretty bad so i'd think itd fail on them too... and yeah think thats the spec, sorry for being silly but what does the spec have to do with mot and stuff?

The online MOT testers manual states:-

Evidence of a tyre contacting a part of the vehicle, such as due to tyre flexing or suspension movement, is not considered to be a defect. A vehicle should only be rejected if the tyre is fouling a part of the vehicle at the time of test.

I've never heard of anyone fitting 205/55R16 to a Fabia MK1 without rubbing, so it would have been interesting for others to know the specification of your rims such as offset if you had managed to fit them without rubbing.

They will rub, it's daft, the only reason to fit 55's is because they're common and cheap secondhand. The speedo will also under read quite badly.

I'd be a little concerned about the front wheelarch liners. If they're OK, just throw it through the test on the 205/55s. For info, 205/50s should be alright. Anything wider (215) or different offset wheels might cause a problem on the OS rear where the wheel arch liner bulges to pass the fuel filler pipes.
