Possible purchase 2016 1.4tdi

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

Just looking for some advice, as most of us are...I'm looking at purchasing a 2016 1.4tdi MC manual with around 60k miles and, whilst I love the car, am concerned about any maintenance issues. There seems to be little information on this engine, particularly in this car annoyingly.

My first query is cambelt, what's the interval on them for this engine, I've seen varying information but I would normally expect to do it around 60k which would be immediate maintenance required on the car.

Second query is: when the car started up at the dealership there was a faint squeal at idle for the first few minutes, is this normal? I'm wondering if it relates to the possibility of the (potential) impending cambelt change requirement.

And lastly, what's the general reliability of these like, most of the owner reports I've seen are for low mileages...

Thanks in advance,

A

Are you sure it's a 1.4TDi engine because we owned a Fabia 2013 Monte Carlo (White with black roof and 17" Gunmetal grey alloys) and it came with a 105PS 1.6TDi engine?

Yes a 3 Cylinder 1.4 TDI Euro 6.

Yesterdays thread might help.  & look at overheating thread at the top of the page.

@Spec555

Sorry to have missed it.  Welcome to the forum.

& sorry to anyone selling a Mk3 Fabia with a 1.4 TDI but i would avoid even with someone else's barge pole.

But if VW Group are going to just pretend there is no Fundamental Issue then Skoda Dealers should be landed with lemons.

I was told this by dealer and Skoda UK.

"It is due when the car reaches 5 years or 140,000 miles from the date of registration whichever comes first."

Below maybe helpful,

Mines done 96k, averages 59mpg, mostly short trips then I do 2 or 3 long trips a week for work. I was doing 20k a year but I'm doing around 14k now.

Outside routine maintenance and services

39k, water pump and coolant was changed.warranty.

45k, clutch and flywheel replaced. Warranty.

92k, crack in panoramic roof.£90 with autoglass. Due to stone damage.

I service it myself every 9.5k, since warranty ended.

Any questions let me know and I'll try and help.

The water pump issue is well known but like almost every engine out there, it has faults. The bigger question is if it has more faults and is more unreliable that other engines. At this point in time, no-one really knows.

The only thing I can tell you is that 60+ mpg is possible without much compromise of driving style.

Faint squeal points towards the accessory belt. If you've been driving in the rain a lot, when you switch it off dirt can settle on the belt, which can make it make a noise as it slips.

The accessory belt also drives the alternator, when you first start up, the alternator works a little harder to bring the battery voltage back up and recharge it.

Both those things combined can contribute towards a noisy accessory belt. It clears up a little as load decreases and any dirt or water dissapears.

The accessory belt (and tensioner) is generally do-able by yourself if you have a little know-how.
