Wax or oil on windscreen. If you use a wax wash, try to not get any on the windscreen when cleaning the car.

My partners 9 year old Toyota Yaris has had juddery wipers recently. When I washed it the other day, I applied some Autoglym glass polish to the screen and she says they are fine now.

Probably some contamination from the production process on your car?

Almost certainly wax (been through a car wash lately?).  Vinegar as Skoda1982 suggests or wet a cloth with concentrate screen wash (the stronger the better) and give it all a good rub.  Glass polish is also a good solution on the screen though can be messy - autoglym is good and can be had almost everywhere though I prefer G-Techniq personally.  Oh and finally use screen wash at the recommended concentration in your washer reservoir and not water as it helps stop a build up happening over time.

I've had the same here on my 3 day old Scala. Its summertime here with almost no rain this year at all.  But as luck would have it the 3rd day of ownership, it rains!

The wipers were juddering across, what seemed to be a brand new and very clean screen. Nothing obvious could be seen on the screen or wiper blades.

I've given the screen and blades a good clean with concentrate window cleaner, plus put some washer fluid additive in with the water..  Although as luck would have it again - its no longer raining and not going to for a while so I cant be sure its better.

If I put the washer on and wipe the screen, so far it seems better though.

Maybe it something left over from manufacture or transport? The car spent 2 months on a ship to get all the way to me here in the south pacific and I know they cover the windows or something while in transit. Maybe its something to do with that.

Some form of contamination from transport (or even the dealers PDI depending on what they’ve used to clean the car) would make sense.  Can’t see it being a manufacturing defect as such, though if the angle of the wiper blade is off it could cause judder - have seen this on older cars but not new though.   Is there smearing on the screen as well?   Hopefully the concentrate windscreen wash does the trick.  Might take a few goes though!

no smearing, just the judder. I'll report back if its resolved once I've and a few rainy trips

I guess the washer fluid is acting as a slight lubricant between the rubber wiper blade and the glass?

If washing the screen with the washer fluid improves the juddering, then this would point me to either worn wiper blades (unlikely on a brand new car), or contaminants on the windscreen (highly likely on a new car).

A quick Google search and there were quite a few sites reminding owners to wipe the contact surface of the actual wiper blades too...

Ive cleaned both the wipers and windscreen but I'll need to do it a few times I think as it is still doing it a bit. We are into week 2 of lockdown here so the new Scala is just in the garage going nowhere for the moment. Otherwise I could get the wipers replaced from the dealer later as another option

Having received my Scala (at last) I can report I also had severe juddering to start with.  A combination of a deep clean of the windscreen and blades with concentrate screen wash (used neat) and use seems to have cured the problem.

Sadly not the same for me - and this is with the dealer cleaning it - while also deep cleaned it only lasted a short while and the juddering is back. So new blades are due in this week for me to swap out. Will see how those go.

Fingers crossed 🤞

The wiper blades that come from the factory/skoda are crap get Bosch ones

So my third visit into the dealer for this issue .  They replaced the blades again and already replaced the arm, but this time they also polished the glass with a compound to smooth it out. They said sometimes as part of manufacture process the screen is not 100% smooth and the polishing process should sort it. They tested after for quite a while in their wash bay with plain water and the problem was gone. Apparently they have seen it happen before.

The glass seems clearer now, but the proof will be driving in the rain which I haven't done as yet,  So I'll see if it lasts.

Hopefully this time it is fixed
