When driving straight, steering twitches off line

Featured Replies

I assumed it was droplinks, so changed them. It continued, so I tightened them again. It’s still happening.....

So as in driving in a straight line, it is very lightly stiff to move from that point. Twitchy.

Any suggestions?

Do you have Lane Assist turned on!?

It feels a like lane assist adjustment, but this vehicle only has ‘front assist’, which is for the Adaptive Cruise.

Is it always the same stretch of road? Motorways/DC's with wagon grooving can make any narrower track vehicle like a car 'tramline' where the car tries to follow one or other wheel track, or worse wanders between the two! The effect will often goes away with a change of tyres on the front, so if you have a different pair on each axle (all same) then a front and back swap might cure it. I had a B5 Passat that was awful for this on the original tyres.

Superb 2010 is definitely not a MKIII though, maybe more luck at the appropriate forum for the appropriate car?  Unless not talking about the car in your signature.

I had an issue with a B7 Passat, which felt like the steering was twitchy.

In the end, it turned out to be the steering rack.

It only happened after I had been driving for more than an hour. Driving in a straight line on the motorway, it felt like it was twitching one way or the other. When you’re driving along, you are continually making very slight adjustments to the steering without even thinking about it, so for slight deviations from straight, you aren’t aware that you’re steering. My steering rack was ‘sticky’ and when I was making slight steering inputs, nothing was happening, so I was subconsciously putting more effort into the steering, at which point the rack would suddenly move, making it feel twitchy.

The dealer took some convincing  that there was an issue, as it never manifested itself until I had been driving for at least an hour, but eventually VW agreed to replace the rack and all was good.

Mine is a 2016 B8. I have had a 2010 & 2012, year so probably need to update my bio.

Tramline is the feeling I get. Rack a huge job? Is there a way to check it?
