Rear sub frame corrosion

Featured Replies

It's been just over a week since owning the Octavia.

On day of purchase, carried out inspection (as you do).  The rear subframe does have corrosion.  I carried out some tapping and the frame feels solid, thankfully.

Best option?

Remove surface rust and underseal

Or

Source a replacement subframe

What sort of age and mileage has the car done?

2007, and 90,000 miles.

I can't comment on whether you should replace or not but I do know someone who is starting to break a VRS of a similar age if that's of any help.

Most are probably the same. Mine is similar (2004 - 99k miles)

I just pressure wash it in Spring and spray liberally with GT85 every 6 months

There will be lots of other component failures that will secure the demise of a 13 year old car, long before the subframe fails.

Depending on what/where I'm treating for this sort of thing I'm a fan of ACF-50,  Owatrol Oil or Dinitrol. You should NEVER underseal very rusty metal as if anything it makes the rust worse long term as rust/ condensation tracks underneath with predictable results.

ACF-50 good at spraying on and soaking in
