The reason will be to you off backing out of the deal. Leaving a deposit constitutes a legal contract that you will buy the car.

When I bought my Fabia we were asked for a deposit and we gave £500 we also put a deposit for our latest cat Octy 2 estate and had to put a deposit on that too of £500. Just thought that was normal myself as when we have bought 2nd hand cars in the past we had to put deposits on those too.

Varies from garage to garage. Ford never asked me for one and I have had a fair few cars off them. Skoda wanted a token deposit of £300 iirc. As I was havind dual controls fitted and making a specific factory order, I thought this to be reasonable.
