Power Steering Pump

Featured Replies

Hello. I own a 2002 Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v in immaculate condition. It has done 67k and has been maintained well (most of the time at a Skoda main dealer) Last week the power steering went. RAC was called out and replaced fuse (box next to driver's door.) Everything worked fine until car was restarted and it blew the fuse. We put a number of fuses in but it would just blow after about a mile of driving. RAC could not diagnose the problem and now looking at experience pump replacement. Anyone have any suggestions of the issue or similar experience?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Yes, your pump has developed a fault and needs to be replaced, it's obviously drawing too much current for the fuse to handle and since the unit isn't serviceable I suggest you buy a decent secondhand pump as a new one is very expensive.

@Petrolhead737

Fuse is probably shared with something else. Will check shortly.

EGR valve rings a bell. Try disconnecting that and see if the fuse stops popping.

Yep, fuse 7 is the solenoid feed of the EGR valve, as well as PAS ignition live feed. Not sure why it wouldn't blow quicker if it was the PAS pump, whereas the EGR isn't used until coolant temp exceeds 50°C or so, which sounds about right for a mile of driving. Try disco'ing the EGR connector as an experiment.

Thank you Wino. Yes I also, noticed that will try it. I don't know how to find a decent second hand pump?

Diagnose before shopping.

I missed that it was the low current fuse, ignore me, I thought it was the big fuse on top of the battery.
