1st year VED rates in UK from April 2020 - wierd

Featured Replies

Following on by the excellent thread by Carkus in the Kodiaq forum,  ( New VED rates ) I thought I'd take a look at the Karoq.  What's the current public opinion - diesel is bad, small petrol good ?

As CarKus points out 1st year VED rates will change in April but it appears the smaller Karoq doesn't escape those Kodiaq price hikes. Just had a brief look at different models / engine combinations and found a few surprises:

At present, SE-Tech ( or SE-Drive ) models pay much the same as SE-L  - typically £170 for most engines.

However from April 1.0tsi, 1.5tsi and 1.6tdi  ( manual or auto ) SE-Tech ( or SE-Drive )SE-L will pay £530 !!!

Now if that's not shocking enough, those of you who chose the 2.0 4x4 auto in either 150 or 190ps guise will have to pay a whopping £855

But this is where it gets really interesting...   A 2.0tdi 150 manual SE-L produces 150g/km, thus the 1st year VED is only £210

...And a 2.0tdi 150 manual Edition, which remember comes with larger and heavier 19" rims, the extra weight of a sunroof and powered boot lid, has an even lower C02 figure of 149g/km - i.e. less than an SE-L Wonder how they managed that?

So for a government that's supposed to be environmentally responsible and all this talk of dirty diesels being banned or charged in congestion zones, the government are incentfying you to purchase a 2.0tdi over a 1.0tsi, a 1.5tsi, or even a 1.6tdi :o

Perhaps someone can double check my calculations because that just seems crazy.

P.S.  Do you want some REALLY bad news?  If you choose the 2.0tsi Sportline ( 192g/km ), the new 1st year VED will be £1280 :crying:

Got to get the VED revenue lost on electric vehicles back from somewhere it seems..........quite a bitter pill to swallow that £1280 tab - it should boost the value of 2019 models a little?
