Improved 4x4

Featured Replies

Has anybody else noticed that after a remap (Revo on mine) that the whole car feels "lighter" - brakes, steering everything? Is this just subjective coz the cars quicker or is there a real reason like the 4 wheel drive acting differently?

PS this is an improvement not a cause for complaint:) just curious thats all.

dad said that when his was done... possibly hadlex acting differently with extra power?? Dunno could still be just imagination!

its all in your head, the haldex has its own seperate ecu.

yup... replaceable as well to give rear wheel bias etc.

can't give a rear wheel bias as the haldex unit is only a set of wet clutches that are controlled by a hydraulic system :)

but the uprated controller is definitly available and certainly behaves quite differently :)

and it's bloody good!

i do plan on getting on at some point but i do wonder if your very high regard for it is partly due to the fact that yours was knackered before changing it, not knocking it at all eddy but did you drive any other 4x4's before and after changing your haldex ecu to compare and contrast?

just out of interest like, i'd hate to go spend

I don't know whether its putting more power to the rear or not, but I suppose that might explain why the front feels lighter? I know the Haldex has its own ECU but surely it will act differently if you put more power in - causing the front wheels to slip more etc.

No I didn't to be fair.

You mean driving mine in a straight line down that road near JBS didn't tell you anything?

As for the 'lighter' feel, its probably just cos you're travelling faster. I know booting mine mid roundabout after the remap lead to some very tippy-toe exits, it came off the roundabout so much faster than pre-remap.:D

A number of 4X4 owners here have had/have Haldex ECUs with checksum errors - which indicate an internal problem which can only be fixed by replacing the ECU. But I am not sure if that fault manifests itself as obvious handling problems due to the Haldex system not working as it should.

Does this come up via VAGCOM?

Yes, the fault is a bit ambiguos and it was never determined in my case if it was definetely affecting the units operation.

as long as something tells you something 'might' be wrong then thats great! :)

Yeah you just need to try and connect to the haldex ECU module once in vagcom.

No I didn't to be fair. There's a guy on vag20vt.net who got one on his S3 and is also really impressed.

I think one of the audi forums is doing a GB on these at the moment including fitting at AMD.

interesting, do you know which forum it is? :)

This is the VAG-COM scan report which alerted me to the Haldex ECC fault - fortunately while the car was still under warranty:

Address 22: AWD

Controller: 02D 900 554 B

Component: HALDEX LSC ECC 0006

1 Fault found:

65535 - Internal Control Module Memory Error

00-00 - 0

Following replacement of the ECC with a later (D) version under warranty, this is what a scan now reports:

Address 22: AWD

Controller: 02D 900 554 D

Component: HALDEX LSC ECC 0011

No fault code found

so what are the symptoms that alerted you to this fault?

I don't think Denis noticed any problems.

For me I just thought that sometimes the rear wheels weren't engaging when they should but most of the time it seemed fine.

so what are the symptoms that alerted you to this fault?
None. I purchased a VAG-COM interface lead from Ross-Tech a couple of weeks before the car went out of warranty. This fault turned up the first time I used it - and covered the cost of VAG-COM threefold. :D

Its just over the last couple of days, I am sure I have noticed a little bit of wheelspin from the front wheels on occaisions, which I shouldnt be getting. But as its in for a service soon, will get it checked and as you say any faults should be found via diagnostics.
