Do I need a 110 TSI over a 95 for long motorway journeys?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking for an estate to do mainly long drives from the south-west to Berkshire / Surrey / M25 journeys. I therefore need the car to be as refined at speed as possible, I cruise along at about 75 MPH so outright power / high speed cruising in itself is not so important. My questions are:

1) Given the 6 speed gearbox in the 110, what's the difference in RPM at this kind of speed in top gear vs. the 95?

2) Again given the extra gear (which I imagine gives lower revs per MPH), is there any difference in fuel economy on a long run between the two?

3) What is the difference between the two in terms of refinement?

Would really appreciate some informed opinions on the above, esp. if any of you have driven both versions on motorways and can share personal comparisons.

Thanks.

Just re-read what I wrote - Replace “do I need” with “should I hold out for”

😉

@DJ_EFK   Maybe best plan is that you go and get extended test drives of both and see what you think.

I maybe should not be posting into this topic, but here goes, the 110PS 6MT should always cost a bit more and if given the choice without ever driving/owning a 1.0TSI 95PS 5MT, I'd always go for the 1.2TSI 110PS 6MT as in my experience of using one of these engines in a Polo, it works quite well.  There must be benefits in getting a 1.0TSI 95PS 5MT, but I don't know what they are or if they will mean much in your intended use of this car. Maybe later and narrower torque peak in the 1.0TSI 95PS when compared with the 1.2TSI 110PS.

Just to be clear, I’m talking about the 1.0 TSI range here (110 vs 95 versions). I’m not referring to the 1.2.

Ah, okay, I thought that the higher output 1.0TSI was 115PS, maybe not now or for all VW Group marques.

Comparing the torque between the two engines is probably more important than the power for the type of driving you describe.

1.0 TSI owner here (110 rather than 115, but still 6-speed).

I cruise at 70mph - RPM sits at around 2100 in 6th gear and, once warm, you can't really hear the engine noise anymore (over the radio and road noise, at least). I've only got the standard hatch, but I imagine the estate would be pretty similar.

I will be looking to swap mine later this year - my motorway mileage is increasing (I bought the car at a time when I was doing mostly city miles), and I'd like something with a bit more presence on the road and a bit more room inside. Still, it does feel very accomplished on the motorway.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have.

When looking to buy my present car, I had the choice between the 1.2TSI  90PS and the 1.2TSI 110PS.

The engines are the same mechanically but one tuned for more power/torque.

The difference between the cars was £500, a 6 speed manual gearbox and a higher insurance group.

This is similar for the 1.0 TSI engines that you are talking about.

I drove a VW Polo with the 1.0 95PS for 1000 KM last year and found it very similar to my car.

This included a longer motorway drive.

I live/drive mainly in North Dorset. There are no motorways in dorset.

I chose the 1.2TSI 90PS, but would have paid extra for a 6 Speed manual if it was an option.

My 5 Speed manual in 5th gear at 2K RPM is showing 55 MPH.

Can others with the 1.2 110PS, the 1.0 95PS and 1.0 110PS tell us their speed at 2K rpm in top gear please?

On longer motorway journeys I have no complaints with good refinement and fuel economy.

As with most new cars the main noise is tyre noise these days.

1.0 110PS here - 2000 rpm in 6th gear would yield just under 70MPH (70MPH results in ~2100 rpm).

I have the 1.2 TSI 110ps. The gearing is 30mph per 1000rpm  in sixth gear.  i havent done a decent run in it yet, mixed motoring to date with quite a few short journeys of only a mile or two when the coolant gauge hasnt reached 90c. I would say it is returning 45mpg so far and I would confidently expect 50mpg or more on a run where 6th gear can be used for decent periods.   The car feels very torquey, you can, if you wish get it into 5th gear at 35mph and 1200rpm and it pulls like a train. You can get it into 6th gear at 40mph at 1300rpm and the same applies.

       I hope this helps.

My 110ps, two people and camping gear, cruises happily at the speed limit on motorways

and still has power to overtake. The extra torque made up my mind.

As above, the power (HP) of the engine is irrelevant at motorway speeds unless you wish to change gear 😛

Torque is your friend here 160 vs 200 nm.

Both should be fine

Thanks all, based on these experiences it seems there’s about some merit in shelling out for the more powerful engine and have the engine turning over at just over 2000 RPM vs. closer to 3000RPM with the 5 speed.

I was going to look at a 1 or 2 year old example but then I’m looking for an unusual spec - 110PS SE with the upgrades listed below - that has done less than 15,000 miles total or has been serviced every year on fixed intervals (and therefore hasnt gone 20k-odd miles without an oil change - this car will be kept until it dies); so there’s not many about that I really want:

LED rear combination lamp £160

Keyless start/stop £170

Full LED headlights with adaptive front light system and front cornering fog lights £975

Cornering front fog lights £150

Silver roof rails £90

Variable boot floor £120

Cruise control + speed limiter £190

Third rear headrest £55

Electric rear windows £170

Carwow is offering this in Red for £15,400 OTR / 22% discount with PCP, which I believe I could pay off at any time - Seems a good deal to me ?

With the addition of some quiet tyres and perhaps some additional soundproofing to dull road noise, Is have a very capable mile-muncher that won’t leave me worn out at the end of a long journey. The wife however thinks a brand new car is financial lunacy so I’ve got to come up with some seriously strong man maths on this one to get it over the line methinks!
