148bhp if I can't get a 187bhp for towing a caravan advice

Featured Replies

Hi all, after 3 years away from the brand it is time to come back, had 4 Skoda's before and my last Skoda was a MK2 Superb 4x4 170 elegance and I swapped that for a 2013 KIA Sportage KX4, 4x4,181bhp producing 282.50 lbs/ft torque and weighs 1600kg so is a capable tow car and tows my current caravan, a Swift Challenger 2017 580 , very well.  My critisms of the car is the finish is just not Skoda quality, it lacks on some of the toys compared to my old MK2 and the ride quality when towing is actually quite bouncy, don't know whether thats due to a short wheel base or it's high suspension but on rough roads it can be a bit nauseating, Oh and the fuel economy is appauling, nowhere near the quoted 46.2mpg, I'm lucky to get near 32mpg on normal/commuting use and when towing ironically it's not much different at about 28mpg.

Anyway been doing my research in to a MK3 Superb and one things obvious I will most likely need an estate for the extra weight, 4x4 if possible again for weight and the added stability and in an ideal world a 187bhp diesel because it produces just a tad more torques than my KIA so the power I would like. Obviously this is a bit of a shopping list that results in not many choices out there. This leaves me with maybe looking at the more common option 148bhp diesel which at 251 lbs/ft torques is down on my KIA and not really my preferred option. I'm looking for opinions and advice of those who tow a caravan near the MTPLM of 1509kg of ours with the 148bhp Superb. I have seen an article with says the 148bhp diesel is a competant and very good tow car but would like to hear from you guys and first hand experience,

I'd also like to add I've been towing for near 20 years so consider myself a competant tow car driver and more than happy to go up to 100% of the cars kerbweight. Cheers

Can't help you on the diesel front (I had a 2wd Mk II 170 estate myself for a few years) but have you considered the 280/272 4x4 petrol? My 280 is rather thirsty (I get 22mpg when towing a 1350kg van) but I do less than 6,000 miles per year so fuel cost isn't an issue for me.

It also does 0-60 in 10 seconds with caravan on the back should the need arise 😁
