Roof Bar advice

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm looking at purchasing Roof bars for my Fabia hatchback (mk3 -19 plate), I'm looking at either  the official/ genuine bars through my Skoda dealer -basically Thule but Skoda branded (that appear to be similar to square bars but with the T groove) OR Thule Evo Wing bars as I read an old post on here that the official ones were really loud when travelling

I have no experience of either but my question is does anyone have the official /genuine bars and are they loud when travelling or is it worth paying the extra and getting the Thule ones which are supposed to be quieter and as they are more aerodynamic.

I know I can take them off when not in use but I don't have a lot of space in my shed so I was hoping to keep them on my car, also with the official Skoda ones  will they fit 3 adult bikes as they are appear a good bit shorter than the Thule Evo wingbars  .....any advice grateful and I hope I've posted this in the right chat

cheers folks

Andy

Official Skoda Bar( Part Number: 6V6071126) as in this link - https://www.theskodashop.co.uk/collections/skoda-roof-accessories/products/skoda-roof-bars-fab3-hatchback-2015-to-6v6071126 OR Thule Evo wing bars https://www.thule.com/en-gb/roof-rack/roof-rack-components-and-accessories/thule-wingbar-evo-127-_-711300

I don't have them, but every test I have ever read assures that roof bars use extra fuel. It's probably OK if you're just using it for local journeys, but on a run it will make a difference.

So the answer to your question is go for the more aerodynamic bars if you cannot remove between uses. In the long-term they'll both be quieter and use less fuel.

As above if you need to go faster you'll eat fuel.

I did some testing with my old A3 TDI. Under 60 they seamed to make no different, at 85/90 I couldn't even get to 40mpg.

(note: these are km/h :P)

A friend at works leaves them on his focus estate, he passed me the other day doing 40-50 I'd guess with a very loud high pitched whistle 🤣 sure they don't all do that, but another thing to consider if you don't have anything on top
